Just got a new private student who was referred for
osteoporosis. Another student in a CVU class wanted to know if
it was dangerous to do neck rotations if she had osteopenia. She
was pretty confused about why any particular movement might or
might not be risky with osteoporosis. Thoughts, knowledge,
questions, etc. regarding Yoga and osteoporosis?

Hi - My pony has been extremely sick this week (hospitalization
in Milton etc etc) and this has been consuming every spare
moment, so forgive my silence. I hope to be back on board
       soon.....

I am a half way through this article
  HTML http://www.yogajournal.com/article/practice-section/standing-strong/
  HTML http://www.yogajournal.com/article/practice-section/standing-strong/,<br
/>and osteoporosis seems a very thin line to walk. Generally, it
seems that twists and forward bends are a big no-no. On the
other hand, research shows that some twists are the only way to
strengthen the anterior spine. Also, cat pose and any other pose
that causes spine rounding can cause micro fractures, so these
should be avoided. On the other side, any weight bearing
postures, such table, plank, or any form of push ups are good.
Also, jumping (working against the gravity) is good - like we do
sometimes when we jump from the mountain into wide stands or
       vsv.
The most interesting part for me was the fact that the stress
affects bone remodeling, so any form of meditation (savasana) is
good"because these practices can shift the balance in the
autonomic nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic
dominance, which in turn can promote a better ratio of old bone
being broken down and new bone being built. In addition, these
practices increase balance, reduce the fear of falling, and
elevate mood, which research demonstrates are key for
       maintaining bone health."

Very good summary. I always ask new students if they have any
injuries or medical conditions. but I don't ask specifically
about osteoporosis. perhaps we should start. I am seriously
considering a specialized class for people with osteoporosis....
       thoughts?
