Why use cobble to cover lava when you can cover it all with a
water bucket?

Water would either evaporate and turn to stone or flood the mine
putting out all my torches. Cobble blocks the lava and i have
alot of it as a water bucket it a one time use.

Put the water bucket on the wall for it to flow down and not be
evaporated by lava. And just place your torches on the wall 2
blocks up.

Guess I am arranging backwards compared to you guys :-[ but I
like my set up better this way. My weapons and main tools are
