SUMO BONSAI

Sumo bonsai is one with an aspect ratio near 1.
Here aspect ratio = height / diameter of nebari
Even though literature is inconclusive, all categories and
styles (??) can be sumo bonsai as long as aspect ratio is still
near 1; viz.
*sumo mame
*sumo shohin
*sumo chohin
*sumo kifu

nerifolia)

I know that to create such a style is tough for some but if you
want a challenging and little out of the ordinary project, then
go ahead and try creating a 'sumo shohin'....may I recommend
ficus like ficus salicicaria. Remember if done right you will
end up with something spectacular. Good luck.

It approaches the sumo style but does not meet fully the
criteria definition of the aspect ratio....height of tree is not
equal to diameter of nebari.
Features of a good sumo are:
Aspect ratio of near 1
An exaggerated, continuous taper
Good-sized base and roots (gripping type)
Proportioned branches at the right places
Natural developmental pattern to the growth

Sometimes what is called a sumo is actually a stump. This is a
stump not a sumo.

Read more on Sumo bonsai. This techniques is not suggested to
the faint hearted since heavy drastic pruning is a must.
