Maybe he can make a career as a DH/1B/LF in his late 20's but
that's a pretty optimistic take.

While it is hard to be too excited about Vitters, he was only 22
last year.
If he had gone to college and was drafted last year and signed
the day of the draft and was sent to Iowa, he could have ended
up with close the to same number of game played as he had before
he was called up last year.
And if as a 22 year old fresh out of college, signing the day of
the draft and sent to Iowa he had hit .304/.356/.513/.869 with
about 15 HR, wouldn't most folks here be seeing him as a likely
long term starter at 3B for the Cubs?
Those were his numbers last year, with 17 HR. And he was 22
last year.
But most here view him as a complete bust, when the same numbers
last year if he had just entered the system would have many
viewing him as a top prospect.
Same prospect in both cases. Just a different perspective.

Watkins' iso power currently is .170---really good for a MIFer.
The problem is the high Ks that are making it hard for him to
hit for average because too few ABs result in a ball in play
(aside from the huge walk total).
Remains to be seen if he can put this all together.
No, he's not going to be Barney defensively, nor will anybody
else.

And given Barney's sub-.650 career OPS, Watkins doesn't have to
be if he develops into a decent offensive player.

I believe the surgery was about 14 months ago.

It looks like the Braves had a better idea of what they were
giving up than most of the people who were criticizing them for
the trade did.
Not to write off Vizcaino by any means, but at least from the
Braves side of things, they probably didn't deserve to get
ripped as much as they did.

I like potential of Watkins and think he has some skills that
could result in a decent MI. He needs to spend the year at Iowa
and give him a shot next spring at a spot on big team. I think
he will hit better than Barney but if he is anything more than a
.250 hitter, we can consider that gravy.

I think the Braves also appear to have recognized that there
were issues with Delgado as well, when they apparently offered
him for Dempster. Sometimes a touted prospect is just the price
a team is willing to pay for somebody they really want. But I
suspect that sometimes when a BA-ranked-such-and-such guy gets
traded for surprisingly little, that the seller knows the guy
better than BA or the buyer.

With a hit today, Ian Stewart has added more than a hundred
points to his BA recently.
Time to bring him up.
