Ben Badler says the Cubs are the favorites to sign two of the
best international prospects in July:

Wish they had drawn back a bit to see the result of all those
swings. From the speed of the pitch, the "net" catcher, and the
consistency of the pitch, I'm guessing that was a machine and
not live arm. Yes, I know, that the camera stopped from time to
time. I was watching the reaction of the guys of watching and
there wasn't much. We saw his throwing motion off a ground
ball; I'd like to see him go after some flies.

From his very peculiar combination of numbers right now, it
seems fair to say that Watkins is making adjustments that are
very hard to assess at the moment. He seems to realize that he
has to get on base to be a useful major league player but hasn't
yet figured out how to put the ball in play consistently, while
retaining the walks. Played SS to the other day. Will be
interesting to see how his season progresses.

Yeah I'm not sure how much I'm liking the new approach thus far.
That being said, he's holding his own in his first taste of
Triple-A, so that's a fairly decent positive. He's also hitting
for some extra base pop. Maybe he can be a Ryan Freel type
without the headcase issues if things work out right for him.

My OPINION.
Too many strike outs for so little power. His defense will be
less than Barney's and his offense will not be much better than
Barney's. I look for him to be a 4th or 5th infielder at best.

Opening day in the Venezuelan league and the Cubs gave up 22
runs and committed 6 errors.
