KLaw..you know Vogelbach has lost 40-50 lbs? Won't that
potentially help his play at 1B? He won't have to be Keith
Hernandez out there....just better than Dave Kingman to be a 1B.

I just saw him in March. I do love when people throw stuff like
this at me, like I don't actually follow the sport I cover.

Yes...you'd be the first online sports guy to ever make
assumptions.Thanks ******. You just lost a reader.

Since you missed the part where I wrote about Vogelbach in March
- and have probably mentioned him in every other chat since then
- it's pretty clear that you weren't a reader in the first
place.
Nope, I read it Keith. You have said the same thing repeatedly
about him, even though his fielding seems to be no worse than
the other first basemen in the Midwest League. At age 20, it's
awfully early to assume that he will never be able to become a
passable first baseman.

His footwork is a disaster. He's a step-and-a-dive, and not
athletic in the least. He can really hit, though. I'm glad to
see you've at least graduated beyond lobbing insults I have to
censor from the chat.
Vogelbach has 5 errors in 29 games this year. That works out to
almost 28 errors over a 162 game schedule at first base. Must
be a lot of awful fielding first basemen in the Midwest League.

Anybody remember the illustrious Don Coomer? He made the
All-Star team for the Twins in 1999. Yes, it was one of those
deals where they had to name somebody and he was it.
I still recall the time the right-handed Coomer was at 1B for
the Cubs and Dave Otto was flabbergasted to see him reach out
for a throw from short with his left foot on the bag instead of
his right.
If Ron Coomer can make it, so can Dan Vogelbach.

Yeah but Coomer came up as a third baseman. He actually played
more 3B than 1B when he was with the Cubs.

Thanks, Dave. Soler isn't far from dominating offensively at
Daytona. While I wouldn't want to rush him to AA, I could
envision a promotion this season if he continues to perform this
well (or better).

I love how people continue to protest Vogelbach as a DH that can
really hit and nothing more. It's getting comical at this
point, like someone is insulting their mother when anyone
suggests he's never going to be anything but a DH or part-time
first baseman.
And then you can start a countdown to when someone will bring
out an old player that played first or left field and didn't
move very well.
You can set your watch to it.

Not sure if posting this is a good idea or not, but Keith Law
still sees Vogelbach as a DH only in today's chat.
Jack (Toronto)
Keith, do you think Vogelbach's bat will continue to develop, or
will his body type hold him back?
Klaw:
Body type absolutely limits his ceiling. DH only.
Perfectly illustrates the point I have been making for some time
about Vogelbach -- that many dismiss him and unrealistically
downgrade their rating of him based on on performance, but on
the fact that he is heavy. And right now some here seem eager
to jump on a couple of errors as a basis for justifying that
belief.

I'm not sure what your point is. If someone says that a player
can not play first base well enough to be a regular there, and
someone else points out some others that were just as bad or
worse, but still played first base well enough to be a regular,
isn't that a valid point?
Certainly, it boils down to whether his bat is good enough to
overcome any defensive weaknesses. But there HAVE been some
players whose bat WAS good enough to overcome similar defensive
weaknesses, so ruling him out on that basis alone is foolish.
