Not sure I've ever seen a worse throw than that one from
Jackson.

Squeeze makes it 4-1. This is another loss that was very
winnable.

I mean, we're 16 games in and they've played exactly one game
where they looked prepared to play major league baseball. Just
one game.
And Jackson continues to be the only guy in the league who can't
get Maldonado out. 5-1.

It's almost certain that the Cubs score 3 more runs and lose
this one 5-4.

BR, if you don't start to realize that this team just flat
stinks, you're going to have a very long and frustrating season.

I'm telling you, I'm very disappointed by Shierholtz' defense in
RF. I thought he was supposed to be really good out there, but
I don't see it. Won't be called an error, but he should have
caught that ball. He seems way to nonchalant out there.

One of my main concerns that I had already last year was that
many observers and writers were gushing over the coaching, the
approach during the spring, and Sveum himself talks a great
game, yet I didn't see it on the field, except for McKay with
the outfielders. Outside of his poor play earlier today by
Soriano, he's been a totally different player. A couple of
pitchers have shown some improvement, but most have not profited
from Sveum's buddy. I see little change in the hitting approach
by a majority of the players.
It's a head scratcher. Two possibilities: the coaches are no
more effective than the ones in the past OR these players really
suck and are unable to learn and improve. Of course, the third
possibility is that it's a little of both.

Chris, no one is saying they're a good team. But it seems like
every game they have an inning or two where they just kick the
ball around like a little league team. I don't expect Gold
Glovers at every position. But they have made errors on three
of the most routine plays you'll ever see (and another misplay
on a fourth) in two innings tonight...and this kind of thing has
happened at least half a dozen times already this year.
If they were out there making the plays like an anti-awful (not
even average, just anti-awful) major league team, they'd have
7-9 wins by now. But they're not. They're tied for the major
league lead in errors, and they've already given up 11 unearned
runs this year. Before tonight's disaster, Fangraphs had them
at 30th in the majors in team defense, having already cost the
team 10 runs. They are literally just giving away games.

Ron, I agree about Schierholz. He came in with a great rep. I
heard a lot of praise for him last year at the WS. I wonder if
his skill set wasn't ASSumed by the coaching staff...

Maldonado vs. the Cubs this year: 5 for 8, 1 walk, 2 doubles.
Maldonado vs. everyone else this year: 1 for 17, 1 HBP, 1
double.
