Because the season record doesn't really matter and instead the
goal remains creating value?

Crew chief's explanation:
“Any point between second and first that they would have tagged
him, he’s out,” crew chief Tom Hallion said. “What he did was
take the liability to be put out by leaving second base. But
once he got to first base, now that’s his.”
Talk about knotty problems of baseball. If somebody asked me
how a baserunner could steal second and then be caught stealing
the same base with one AB in the inning---don't think I'd get
that one. Until now.
Imagine if he stole the same base twice in one AB. That would
be even better.
I think Rizzo abandoned 1B and went to cover 3B on the rundown,
leaving 1B uncovered. The pitcher, Camp, should have been
covering 3B. Not sure where Camp ended up. Geez.

One of the really endearing things about baseball is that it's
such a relentlessly quirky game that even now, you can see
things you've never seen before.

Imagine if he stole the same base twice in one AB. That would
be even better.
I was thinking the same thing at the time. "Who stole the same
base twice in the same PA.
By the way, the Cubs could easily have tagged him out when he
left second base. The Cubs tagged Segura and then tagged Braun.
That made Braun out because Segura owned the base. But Segura
thought HE was out, and started trotting to the dugout. The Cub
with the ball could easily have tagged him out, or thrown to
first base, where there was a Cub standing. But with Braun
standing on the base, and Segura trotting to the dugout,
everyone thought he was already out. I believe it was the first
base coach that told Segura to take first base, and at that
point the Cubs tried to tag him, but it was too late.

I have seen accounts of Ty Cobb having "stolen" first from
second base after stealing 2nd and then deciding he wanted to
verbally harass the pitcher and feeling he could not rattle him
enough from 2nd base.

They actually did tag him right after he left second base. It
should have been a double play.

Good replays of the bizarre base running play from Friday linked
below.
At the first replay (about 40 seconds into the link), looks like
the 1B coach touches Segura (while Segura is off the base) to
coax him back to 1B, as Segura is headed to the dugout.
Normally, the runner should be called out when a coach makes
physical contact like that. But, looks like time out was called
by the 1B ump. Note also that Hairston, the RFer, seems to be
backing up the play. Rizzo is probably covering home plate, as
catcher Castillo and the pitcher were covering 3B. 1B was left
wide open.
In the second replay (about 1:05 into the link), note that
Barney literally takes the ball out of the clueless Valbuena's
glove, as Barney realizes Segura is headed back to 1B---and then
Valbuena makes an effort to take the ball back from Barney! I
guess Valbuena thought that he had to tag Braun multiple times.
This play probably will turn out to be the highlight of the Cubs
season---the most remembered at least.
