I think the Cubs would love to trade Soriano, Marmol or even
Vitters to make space on the roster. And would be happy to
trade quite a few others if they could get what they consider
equal value in return and at the same time create that space.
But if that doesn't happen, there aren't a lot of players on
their roster that they wouldn't very likely lose if they placed
them on waivers. If I had to choose, I would probably waive (or
DFA) first Rusin or second Clevenger. I think both would be
taken by some other team, but either of them are probably of
       less value than Villanueva.

Reading tweets from the convention, it seems like the recurring
theme with fans is to get Tony Campana more playing time.
       Awful.

Well, guess the Cubs changed their minds:

That Marlin guy over at PSD said yesterday that the Cubs have
been looking for a 2 for 1 trade to open up a spot.... More
likely, though, someone is going to get DFA'd. ..[/quote]

Management seems like a bunch of smart, detailed, thoughtful
guys, and I know it's not cool to find fault at this point. But
I admit I wonder whether they've maybe mismanaged the 40-man
       roster.
They have unnecessarily added players who clearly weren't super
ready or highly qualified, in pursuit of a 99-loss season.
Beliveau, Rusin, Raley, did all three of those guys have to come
up? Then this fall, Whitenack and Watkins (and Lake?), did
those guys really need to get added? Was there a real threat
that Whitenack or Lake or Watkins were going to be on somebody's
25-man roster, and that we'd miss them? Seems to me like
they've been kind of careless in adding guys unnecessarily, and
then forcing yourself to DFA guys who still have a chance to
emerge as userful/servicable big-leaguers. If the roster is
getting pinches and they are losing guys who have some
desirability, that hasn't really been necessary.
Perhaps the bosses figure that whoever they DFA, they could care
less. But if they could care less, why didn't they do it weeks
ago when they signed Villa? I think that suggests that they do
care at least a little. Just seems to me that they've been
unnecessarily DFA'ing guys who didn't need to be rostered in the
first place, or who'd have had a better chance to survive the
25-man requirement of Rule 5 than the 40-man requirement of a
       DFA.

Hindsight is usually more accurate than foresight. When making
roster choices, you not only have to take into account how YOU
view a particular player, but also have to try to guess how each
of the 29 other teams view them. In my opinion, teams like
Houston, Colorado, Seattle or others would be idiots if they
didn't take a player like Lake, who has outstanding tools, and
hide him on their 25 man roster for a year as the Cubs did with
Lendy Castillo. And Whitenack is in much the same situation
that the newly acquired Rondon was in, a player with excellent
tools and some record of success, but severe health issues. I
doubt that he would have survived the draft. As far as Watkins
is concerned, if Martinez and Flaherty can disappear in the
draft, how safe could Watkins be.
For the most part, we are talking about prospects that are on
the fringe major league ability, and all are gambles, either on
the part of the acquiring team or on the part of the team who
risks losing them. And if the Cubs system improves the way we
hope it will, these problems will get bigger, rather than
       smaller.

That must have been their logic, that teams would want
Watkins/Whitenack/Lake enough to draft them and keep them on
       their 25-man.
But how about Beliveau, Raley, and Rusin? Seems to me those
guys were all added late, and Hoyer must have known that by
adding them late, it would necessitate that guys like Beliveau
would need to be derostered before the winter was done. Guys
are more likely to get returned from some other team's 25-man
       than 40-man.

I think Hoyer thinks of them as being essentially replaceable,
or interchangeable with others that other teams will not be able
to control, either. If any had stepped up and looked great,
they would have been protected. They didn't, and if lost, they
can probably be replaced by players of equal value next winter.
I think we will see the same thing with trades this year, if the
Cubs are doing well. Short term players that can be traded for
some future assets, but are fairly easily replaceable on the
free agent market may still be traded. Feldman, De Jesus,
Villanueva and others come to mind.
On another subject, here is a quote from Castro, presumably from
       the Convention that is interesting.
"Every year I want to be better," Castro said on Friday at the
Cubs Convention. "Every year, I work hard to be better than I
was the year before. That's why I'm working now; that's why I'm
not going to the World Baseball Classic. I won't play for the
Dominican because it's more important for me to be ready for the
[Cubs]. I want to help the [Cubs]."
It's better for me to be working and play every day in Spring
Training. If I go, I'd play one day, two days a week. I don't
want that. I want to work. It's one of my goals to play for my
country, and it's tough for me [to say no]," Castro said. "But
it's not the last one. I know I'll be there."
