Just FWIW...there's a rumor going around today that Scott
Hairston is going to sign this week, and Heyman just tweeted
       this:

#cubs have talked to scott hairston, as well, so he has non-NY
       possibilities

Not really sure why the Cubs would be interested. He only hits
LHP, and he's a pretty weak OBP guy even against them. He
doesn't seem to be the type of player the front office has been
interested in. As a fourth outfielder, he wouldn't be bad...but
hopefully, they already have their fourth outfielder in
Schierholtz, and they'll sign a real CF soon.

Maybe they're thinking a Schierholtz/Hairston platoon in RF?

I'd rather go Schierholtz/Sappelt, unless they're planning on
       two platoons (DeJesus/Sappelt, Schierholtz/Hairston).
But really, if they add an outfielder, I'd like to see a
legitimate everyday CF. Or at least a 450+ AB guy who can limit
DeJesus' and Sappelt's time out there (someone like Gerardo
       Parra).

I think they look on Schierholtz as a full time right fielder,
with only occasional days off. Sappelt would fit in well as a
       platoon CF and occasional RF.

Maybe they are thinking they need somebody with at least some
power in the outfield after they trade Soriano.

I'm starting to think it's unlikely that Soriano or Garza gets
traded before the season starts unless the Cubs are completely
blown away. They've added enough pitching that I think it's
clear that they're not giving up on this season, no matter how
much some Cubs fans are invested in the team sucking for 3-4
       years. I don't think they're expecting to win...but I bet they
feel like they're close enough to .500 at this point that a
little luck could make it an interesting season.
There's no one on the market right now to replace either of
those guys, so trading them would hurt the team's chances this
year. I mean, if someone comes along and offers the same deal
they would've offered last June for Garza, or someone gives up a
near major league ready everyday guy for Soriano, of course
they'll do a deal. But for the type of return they could
realistically get right now, I think they'd prefer to see how
the start of the season goes before trading them.
Marmol is a different story because there are still a few guys
on the free agent market that could replace him adequately. But
I think there's no better than a 50/50 chance that Soriano
       and/or Garza goes.

If the Cubs get their price for Soriano he's gone. The question
is if teams will meet their price. Garza is a toss up though

I agree...but I think their price is considerably higher than
you'd think it would be at this point.

I don't think the Cubs see much of a point of paying Soriano $12
million per year to play somewhere else. If we could get a stud
prospect for him, yeah sure, but you're probably not going to
get impact prospects for him, no matter how much of his salary
       we pay.
Besides, this year's team still needs a power bat, so he's still
filling a need. Unless we're overwhelmed, it probably just
makes as much sense to keep a 25-30 home run bat and a positive
       veteran influence on the team.
