No question the CFL contacts Trestman has would have present
some interesting possibilities... both in terms of coaching
staff and players.
Before we get too carried away though, keep in mind we had a CFL
guy in here a year or two ago (Fantuz?), who was supposedly one
of the best WRs in the CFL. He didn't even come close to making
the Bears' roster and that's when we were desperate for help at
the position.
Not saying there aren't some gems up in Canada we could swipe
but my impression is that the talent level of a typical CFL
roster is about equivalent to, say, a mid-tier SEC team. So we
may need to manage our expectations somewhat there.

Toub leaving

Special teams coach Dave Toub will not return to the Chicago
Bears under the team’s new head coach.
An NFL source told the Tribune on Tuesday morning that Toub, one
of 13 known candidates to interview for the head-coaching
position, is definitely leaving the organization after nine
seasons. He was one of four special teams coaches the Bears
considered for the job.
Toub is expected to join Andy Reid’s staff with the Kansas City
Chiefs but no announcement has been made and Toub could not be
reached for comment. Toub’s contract with the Bears ran through
2013 but general manager Phil Emery granted him permission to
interview with the Chiefs and Carolina Panthers. It is believed
Emery did so because Toub didn’t want to be in a difficult
position working for a head coach he competed against for the
job.
Toub was an original hire on Lovie Smith’s staffs and the Bears
finished in the top-10 in comprehensive special teams rankings
in eight of nine seasons. They placed eighth this season despite
not having the kind of success that had become expected in the
return game. Under Toub, Devin Hester became the NFL’s all-time
leading scorer on special teams returns. Hester was one of five
different special teams players to reach the Pro Bowl under
Toub.
Reid gave Toub his first job in the NFL with the Philadelphia
Eagles in 2001 and the two worked prior to that at Missouri and
UTEP, making a reunion a natural fit. It is believed Toub also
had an offer from Ron Rivera and the Panthers.
It’s not known what direction the Bears will go in. Special
teams assistant Kevin O’Dea remains under contract to the Bears.
He could be considered for the job but indications are he also
may desire to go to the Chiefs with Toub.
Former Bears special teams assistant Chris Tabor, under contract
to the Cleveland Browns, is in high demand. To this point, the
Browns have not released him from his contract.
Definitely the best addition to Andy Reid's staff down there in
KC so far. The Chiefs used to OWN special teams back in the day
and I suspect under Toub they'll be back to that status pretty
soon.
This puts Hester's future with the Bears even more in doubt.

A lot of the talent up there played college football here in the
states. And another knock on Lovie's staff is they couldnt
develop an all pro let alone even Alshon Jeffery. So with better
player development due to having coaches that can teach we might
have a better overall roster. Trestman knows what talent up
there translates to our game here.

Kick returners arent that hard to find in the draft, plus they
are a lot cheaper than what we were paying Hester.

And why did they go up there in the first place? Cuz they
couldn't cut in the NFL. If the CFL was a minor league for the
NFL you'd be seeing teams bringing down talent from the Canada.
It rarely happens.
And another knock on Lovie's staff is they couldnt develop an
all pro let alone even Alshon Jeffery.
Alshon Jeffery's biggest problem was that he broke his hand and
injured his knee - I have no issue with his development this
year other than that weird game he had against the Packers where
they kept calling him on all those offensive pass interference
penalties.

It may come down to whether our new HC envisions a place for
Hester in our new offense or not. I would expect our new ST
Coach will have some opinions on Hester's future viability as
well.

I doubt if that's true. I think he had enough of the Bears'
organization and wanted a chance of scenery. And the fact that
he has a history with Reid as opposed to some unknown guy in
Chicago that has yet to be hired was also a big factor.

Well it surely depends on the new OC can develop Hester or not.
Hester couldnt cut it under Lovie.

We've all taken our special teams for granted for years. This
year folks complained how we had such a poor special teams
production yet we were rated 8th.
Poor special teams play is when teams are running back punts and
kickoffs consistently for big yardage - we haven't seen that
with the Bears for a long time.

I'd hate to see the STs regress, and I'm sure Emery isn't really
relishing the idea of scaring up a decent ST coach on top of
finding a HC.
That being said, if our offense can get it into gear it will
hopefully soften the blow at least a little. Under Lovie our
offenses were so bad that we NEEDED our STs to score. Now
hopefully that will be a luxury and not a necessity.
