I hope while Phil is interviewing Clements today he slips some
truth serum into Clements' Coke and gets all the secrets of
shutting down Rodgers.

Even if that's all the interview accomplishes it would be time
well spent.

If I had to rank my preference, given the candidates, I'd go...
1. Arians - His track record with Big Ben and Luck is too much
to ignore. Indy improved all year under him while Pagano was
out. IMO, the surest thing in the bunch.
2. Clements - Uh, all this guy has done is send Elvis Grbac,
Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox to the Pro Bowl. Pretty sure he
understands the GB-Chicago rivalry too.
3. Trestman - Ton of experience that has included career years
for mediocre QBs like Scott Michael and Jake Plummer. Like
Arians has successful HC experience, although his was in the
CFL.

One thing I'm really glad to see is that ALL of the frontrunners
all have solid records of success with teams that are CURRENTLY
successful.
The last thing you want is some big-ego guy whose teams used to
be good but who hasn't seen the postseason in the last 4-5 years
and is just riding on his rep.
The only candidate that's a little questionable in that regard
is Sullivan from Tampa Bay. The Bucs have been OK the last
couple of years, but not great. They missed the playoffs this
year despite a weak division, and their culture is a mess. But
even Sullivan, pre-Tampa Bay, was with the Giants who were
tremendously successful during his time there.
The downside of going after winners is having to work interviews
around the schedules of playoff teams but that's a tradeoff I'll
gladly make and I'm glad Emery is too. Sure as hell beats the
Bucs / Jags / Rams / Lions castoffs we were bringing through our
doors during the Angelo years.

Yeah that would help.
What I think is extra sweet is that the Clements interview is
happening today. A key prep day for the Packers before a long
trip out to San Fran for a huge playoff game, and one of their
coaches is talking to a division arch-rival.
I realize it won't have any material impact on the outcome of
the Packers game, but I know from scanning some message boards
that GB fans are mad as h*ll that he's doing this today and I
suspect the GB players and coaches aren't too thrilled either.
Score one psy-ops point for Emery. A small (but definite) step
towards reversing the curse.

So explain to me why I should care that we are interviewing
Clements...the guy that doesn't even call the plays at GB...and
most likely never has at the NFL level?
So what does he do - hire some offensive line guy as his OC and
he calls the plays?

The Clements angle is a mystery to me as well, as he doesn't
seem to fulfill a lot of the personal or professional
qualifications Emery laid out in his New Years Day presser.
I think this one is more a psych / information grabbing play
than anything else.

The thing I'll always wonder is if their playoff game last
Saturday would have turned out any differently had Arians been
on the sidelines and not in the hospital. For all the great
work he did with the Colts this season, they looked pretty
shabby against the Ravens.
