Not sure how they compile those rankings. When I say Toub's STs
slipped I mean specifically in returns. IIRC we had 2 blocked
FG/punts returned for TDs this year -- which is great but our
returners didn't take a single one to the house all year. On
top of which it seemed like they had a lot more penalties than
usual though I know at least a few of those were caused by
Hester dancing around and reversing field instead of hitting the
       seam.
Rich Gosselin has come up with a rating system that has been
widely used by the league for years. Toub's teams have always
been ranked highly - top 10.
Yes, we know Hester did not have a TD this year and still the
Bears are 8th. What people take for granted is how well the
Bears cover punts and kicks. Plus Gould is usually pretty
accurate (though he was a bit off in 2012).
So are you saying if Toub ranked 3rd this year you'd reward him
       with a HC job?

What I'm saying is that Toub is not our answer at HC material
for a number of reasons, including the ones both you and I
       stated.
Maybe he'll get a HC shot with another team down the line, but
for this team, at this time, he's not right.
It will be good to have Gould back. Mare was not good.

Article on the status of Lovie holdovers Marinelli, Toub and
       Tice.
Also includes a good explanation on why none of them (or anyone
else on Lovie's staff) have been let go yet.
  HTML http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4681873/source-bears-assistants-play-waiting-game#more

The thing with Marinelli in particular is, even if the new HC
wants to keep him, it's a 2-way street. Marinelli has to want
to work with the new HC. I suppose he could resign but then he
won't get paid. After the Lions shibacle no team will ever hire
Marinelli as a HC again. So unless he's prepared to retire
altogether I would think he'd have to be pretty damn sure he had
something else on the line before he'd decide he didn't want to
try to make it work with the new guy. And since his best chance
for another DC gig is probably to follow Lovie... and with
Lovie nowhere near being hired as a HC anywhere yet as far as I
can see... I'm not sure Marinelli has a lot of other options
       right now.
Emery is also reported to be a big fan of Marinelli so I'm sure
the mutual compatibility factor will weigh into his decision on
       the HC too.

As I recall Marinelli was reluctant to even take the DC job when
he offered it as the d-line coach. He's more of a hands on
coach than a 'manager' type - so I don't think the HC position
       appeals to him.
Lovie leaving may be a factor in his leaving but being able to
coach his guys on defense may be just enough of a reason to
stay, that is, assuming the new HC approves.
Didn't a similar situation occurred when they brought in Ditka?
Buddy Ryan came with the deal.

Look at the list and tell me who's better.. Grossman? right...

So you're basing this on Cutler's physical attributes and
potential. I don't. If that's how you feel then you're
entitled but I prefer what he's done the past 4 years and he
hasn't done well the last 2. He's regressed with all those
attributes you just said and still has maded bad decisions, bad
passes, and costly INT's in ball games. After 7 years in the
league you would expect him to do better even here in Chicago.
To me that doesn't make him the best we had in nearly 30 years
but if you're basing who's better by the way of potential and
how he looks then I guess you're entitled..
I agree that list is ugly too but because those guys are
terrible because of their performance on the field. That's what
I'm basing my opinion on Cutler.
       --- Quote ---
       > I agree with Dallas, his decision making (at times) has been a
problem. I think he needs to work on mechanics, problem is, he
has the athletic ability to get the ball down the field (on a
rope) off his back foot. Jay Cutler has twice the toughness
Grossman ever wished he could have. Let's leave Grossman out of
       the discussion, not even close...
       --- End Quote ---
Some are calling Cutler another Jeff George. Would you rather
have Cutler compared to him? He had the physical tools just
       like Cutler!
If you're basing your opinion on physical attributes then why
not Grossman? He led us to a Super Bowl with his strong arm at
least. Cutler did lead us to an NFC championship game but was
injured. Even while he was in the game he was ineffective. I
do hope Cutler gets it straight because we paid a high price to
get him here and you as well as everybody should expect nothing
but the best out of him and not "how strong his arm is" and
potential after 4 years on the team.
I'm not saying to get rid of him but as Marshall has said
everybody has to be held accountable on offense and that goes
       for Cutler too.

If he didn't like dealing with the media and fans in Chicago,
just wait till he winds up here...
Probably the best potential fit I've seen for him yet, though.
They've got some good players on that Philly D but they haven't
played up to their talent in quite awhile. Lovie could put in a
scheme that better fits their talent and get the players pulling
in the same direction. And it's a team that already has the
personnel for a 4-3 vs. teams like Arizona where they would have
       to completely remake the roster.
Will be curious to see who winds up as the OC in Philly if that
       comes to pass.

That's a good point. I'm not sure if it would be better for the
Bears if Lovie got his new job before we named our guy, or
       afterward.
Another thing is, even if Lovie doesn't get a HC job, what
happens if our new HC decides he likes Marinelli but doesn't
like the guys underneath him? Would launching Babich, Hoke,
etc. cause Marinelli to walk as well?

Why is that? All of our coaches are under contract and do not
have permission to interview for lateral moves. Marinelli would
have to be interviewing for a HC position if he is not given
permission because he is listed as DC/Assistant HC.
Now if one of our other Defensive coaches want's to interview
for a DC position they don't need permission because it would be
a promotion. So Lovie could tap into one of those position
       coaches if he wanted.
