Marinelli may remain Bears' defensive
coordinator
Other key assistants could be back too
By Dan Pompei, Chicago Tribune reporter
8:40 p.m. CST, January 7, 2013
Last year the Bears decided to replace general manager Jerry
Angelo but retain head coach Lovie Smith.
This year there are indications they could follow a similar path
on a different level of the organizational flow chart.
A good chance exists the team will hire a new head coach but
retain defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, and possibly other
key assistants, according to those with knowledge of the
situation.
Marinelli and the other assistant coaches from Smith's staff
remain under contract, and the Bears are not allowing them to
interview for other coaching vacancies. The reason is there is a
chance the Bears will want to retain them.
It will depend mostly on the desires of the new head coach. If
the candidate the team settles on wants a different defensive
coordinator, it is unlikely anyone will stand in his way.
But it is clear Marinelli is highly regarded by the
organization.
Retaining Marinelli would enable the Bears to keep their
defensive system intact, which could help the Bears be the most
competitive team possible in the near future. It also could mean
the team might be more interested than they otherwise would be
in retaining free-agent-to-be Brian Urlacher.
Marinelli is one of the most highly regarded assistants in the
league because of his abilities as a defensive line tutor,
motivator and strategist. If the Bears hire a young head coach,
or an inexperienced head coach, Marinelli would provide another
benefit because he has head-coaching experience and could be an
adviser of sorts.
If Marinelli is retained, he and the new head coach could decide
to retain other defensive assistants from Smith's staff.
Quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates also remains a possibility to
return because of his connection with Jay Cutler.
The interview process kept humming along Monday, when Bears
general manager Phil Emery interviewed Montreal Alouettes coach
Marc Trestman in Chicago, according to ESPN Cleveland. Trestman
was also reportedly speaking with the Browns about their head
coaching vacancy.
Other interviews are expected to take place this week, including
Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Texans
offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, as well as Packers
offensive coordinator Tom Clements on Thursday.
Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was released from a
Baltimore hospital Monday and is likely to interview soon as
well.
Some of the candidates the Bears are interested in, especially
Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, might be in greater
demand after Oregon coach Chip Kelly informed teams he would not
take an NFL job this year.

As much as I would love to see Urlacher host the trophy to
finish out his career as a Bear....its a pipe dream.
He is done, we need to move on, the team will be better off
without him next year.

Free agency has OT options for Bears when the time comes
January 7, 2013, 8:55 pm
A number of decisions are on GM Phil Emery’s desk as far as
Bears free agents to be pursued and re-signed this offseason.
Several are franchise-level choices with six ’12 starters
unrestricted: guards Lance Louis and Chris Spencer, linebackers
Nick Roach and Brian Urlacher, tackle Jonathan Scott and
defensive tackle Henry Melton.
But what happens with certain other teams’ free agents on or
before the Mar. 12 start of free agency projects to be
potentially every bit as significant for the Bears as what they
do with some of their own.
Many of the decisions obviously will be made with a new coach in
place, both on Bears free agents and other teams’.
The priority area is expected to be the offensive line. The
draft is one option, where ESPN draft guru said are likely to be
three left tackles and two RT’s going in the first round.
Of more immediate impact, however, given that rookie tackles
drafted around No. 20 where the Bears currently stand, aren’t
always first-year difference makers, is what the unrestricted
free agent market may hold.
And if the new coach – someone like Houston’s Rick Dennison or
Denver’s Mike McCoy – is a zone-blocking proponent, not every
lineman is an automatic fit.
Stat analysts at ProFootballFocus.com have an extensive list of
the pending free-agent tackles that includes their in-depth
rating, and there project to be some elites available for the
Bears. The top five out of contracts:
Ryan Clady, Denver Broncos - Handles Peyton Manning’s blind side
in an offensive run by McCoy.
Gosder Cherilus, Detroit Lions - A right tackle but played well
enough that No. 1 pick Riley Reiff couldn’t beat him out. And it
takes something away from a division rival.
Will Beatty, N.Y. Giants - Fourth-rated LT who came back strong
after missing time with a detached retina in 2011.
Brandon Albert, Kansas City Chiefs - Emery didn’t draft him in
Kansas City but familiarity counts if the talent and personality
are fits.
Sebastian Vollmer, New England Patriots - Another RT but a
linchpin of the line that protects Tom Brady and is responsible
for the rushers coming in Brady’s face.
Emery expressed satisfaction with what the Bears got from Scott
at right tackle. The evaluations of Scott, J’Marcus Webb and
Gabe Carimi will determine the push for whom or how many but at
least the market in ’13 already projects as better than either
of the past two offseasons.

Having an arm doesn't make Cutler better. What has he done with
that "arm" of his? Hell Grossman had a strong arm. Does that
make him better than Cutler? I think Cutler set the team record
for having more 4 or more INT's in a game. Very
unimpressive.....

That goes for ANY QB including Campbell and McCown or any QB we
or anybody has. Rodgers was sacked more than Cutler but he's
going to the Pro Bowl with that woeful protection he has to work
with. ANY QB needs protection. Excuses excuses excuses.....

They will be resigned, no reason to even consider them available

I agree they'd be franchised. No reason to believe they see FA.
The missing name is Jake Long who just might see FA. Nobody can
say for sure but even then I doubt the Bears would bite. They
have too many big salaries of their own to fight through

Based on athletic ability, the ability to get the ball down the
field and hit the receiver, the ability to sling the ball in
tight places, the ability to run the ball, (no one talks about).
Look at the list and tell me who's better.. Grossman? right...
I agree with Dallas, his decision making (at times) has been a
problem. I think he needs to work on mechanics, problem is, he
has the athletic ability to get the ball down the field (on a
rope) off his back foot. Jay Cutler has twice the toughness
Grossman ever wished he could have. Let's leave Grossman out of
the discussion, not even close...

If Cutler had an OL as good as Kramer's line........ We likely
would have been back to a SB.

Re Marinelli staying...
The fact that he was a HC to me is a non-starter in the argument
cause he absolutely sucked at that.
But in terms of maintaining continuity on our D I am definitely
in favor of keeping him and and also to keep our veterans
on-board and engaged in the transition, many of whom are
defensive guys. We can't afford a huge defensive letdown at the
same time we're ramping-up a new offense, and keeping Marinelli
is the best protection against that.
