I have little to no faith that our OL coaches knew much about
       anything.

Edwin Williams has also played some center. I would expect one
of the 2 would at least get some emergency duty as a center. But
usually centers arent picked with 1,2,3rd round picks. I doubt
we've ever drafted a center in the 1st 3 rounds, ever. Even our
famed pro bowl center was a former defensive player in college.
That doesnt mean that the center position hasnt increased in
importance in the last 20 or so years. It just means that your
two OTs are your first priorities in building a line. I also
dont believe drafting a OG in the first round is a priority, 2nd
round maybe if he is good. The problem is there has never been a
priority to drafting OLines by the Bears. To them it seems that
any big fat guy can play Oline. Angelo even thought he could get
away with a 7th round obscure player to play LT. It also showed
when it came to paying Olinemen. Kreutz was the only exception I
have seen to those observation. So It will surprise me to see
OGs taken in the 1st or 2nd rounds of the draft by Emery. But
somehow, someway improvement has to take place or this team will
remain stagnant. Maybe the problem is coaching and strength, but
I have no expertise in that type of thing. I just know we flat
       out s*uck on the Oline.

Olin Kruetz was a 3rd round pick. And IIRC he wasn't an Angelo
pick but a holdover from the Mark Hatley era.

And Hatley was escorted to the door because of his drafting
policies. It was unheard of within the Bears to draft a center
       in the 3rd round.

Hatley got canned for three huge 1st round misses (Cade McNown,
David Terrell and Curtis Enis). Mistakes which the Bears
literally spent almost a decade trying to recover from.
The 3rd round pick for Kreutz was one he actually got right.

Hatley used to take an O-lineman in the third every year.

And our OL was noticeably better at that time too as you'll
       recall.
Then Angelo came in and those yearly 3rd round picks started
going to safeties and DTs instead.
Hatley was utterly incapable of finding skill players, but at
least our OL was competitive on his watch.

So was Jim Finks. We always had good lines under him

I really hope that through a trade or something Emery can
recover us a 3rd round draft pick.
Believe me I'm as thrilled as anyone with how the Marshall trade
has turned out, but going into this year's draft without a 3rd
round pick is huge especially since that can be a real "sweet
spot" for interior O-Linemen, LBers or possibly even a starting
caliber TE that might slip for one reason or another.
There's going to be a LOT of good players coming off the board
between our 2nd round pick and our 4th, and we need to find a
way to tap into one of those guys if there's any way Emery can
       make it happen.
