The 'high-end' franchised burger places have rapidly infiltrated
       the western suburbs of Chicago.
I've eaten at Five Guys a good number of times. First time was
six years ago in the Washington D.C. area and it's was great!
There were a local phenomena is the D.C. area. They grew quickly
and then decided to franchise the place. When they first came
to the Chicago area, I was anxious to see if they could retain
their original quality in a franchise mode. IIRC, there are no
freezers in the stores, only refrigerated coolers. Everything is
freshly made each day. First time I tried it at their Naperville
location I was pleased. Tasted as good as the burgers I
remembered from the D.C. store years earlier. Fries were
fresh-cut, seasoned just right and a 'small' was enough for
two-three people. They usually fill up a drinking cup with
fries and then add another larger scooper full into the bag.
Then I went back again the following week arriving about fifteen
minutes before closing time and it was awful. Burger was drab
and and my 'small' fry order, while very good, was small, just
the cup full and no additional scoop. Since then, I've been
there a number of times but it seems to be hit-or-miss with the
burgers. Half the time it's great and the other half so-so.
IMO, the drawbacks to Five Guys, besides the inconsistency I've
found in the burgers, is the limited menu. Burgers, hot dogs &
grilled cheese only. No chicken options and no milk shakes.
Their french fries are really great though and I like the touch
of the free peanuts while you're waiting for your food to be
       cooked.

About six months after Five Guys arrived in the Chicago area,
Meatheads, a Bloomington IL high-end burger concept based on
the Five Guys model arrived in Naperville. They took Five Guys
to the next level by offering even more 'free' toppings
available on their burgers and added chicken sandwiches and
shakes too. Their banana split shake is fantastic. Fries are
very good, but just a bit below the fries found at Five Guys.
No free peanuts but the atmosphere and decor is a step above
Five Guys and I've found their food to be more consistent.
They've slowly expanded to 4 locations in the Chicago suburbs as
well as their original Bloomington store and plan to open
another one soon in Normal, IL. Only drawback I have found there
is they close at 9pm rather than 10pm like Five Guys. That's
fine in the winter but in the summer when kids have
baseball/softball games that last until 8pm or later, a delayed
dinner with a trip to eat at Meatheads after the game seems
rushed or out of the question. They should expanded their hours
to 10pm to really compete with Five Guys, Portillo's and their
       other competitors in the area.

Smashburger, a Colorado-based franchise, has expanded to the
Chicago area. They opened a location in Darien, IL about six
weeks ago. I tried it a couple of weeks ago and it was okay. I
bummed a few of their rosemary, olive oil and gaarlic fries from
my dining companion and they were very good. Their burger was
tasty and the Haagen-Daz shake was great but a over $10 tab for
a 1/2 pound burger & a shake (no fries) was a bit too high IMO.
I did like that they use the old style shake mixers with the
stainless container and pour your shake into an old fashioned
glass vase-shaped glass at your table which leaves you about 25%
more left in the container to add later. They do offer chicken
options and a wide variety of 'smashsalads' options which is
good but the atmosphere was mostly dull fast-foodish like Five
Guys or a McDonalds. I much prefer Meatheads to Smashburger.

Finally, Tom & Eddie's, a new concept created by two former
McDonalds executives, Ed Renzi (retired CEO of McDonalds USA)
and Tom Dentice (retired executive VP of operations for
McDonalds Corp.) opened last year. I haven't eaten there yet but
I've read and heard mostly good things about their operation.
They've expanded to three locations now with a recently opened
       store in Deerfield.

Not only tried them but have regularly consumed them for over 50
years. Right now, I even have two boxes of them in my freezer.
Growing up in the city, there was a White Castle 3 blocks from
my house. Even today, there's a White Castle 3 miles from my
home in the western suburbs. Sliders are great! Much, much
tastier than that cardboard crap that you call Monical's Pizza.
       ;D

I love the cardboard Pizza . I just had one the other night. I
love their breadsticks and their wings are just ok.
I dont like Pizza Hut Pizza, but their Asian Hot Wings are to
die for. Talk about blazing. Ill order Monicals Pizza then grab
       Pizza Hut hot wings.
One thing that I always thought that was overrated was
       Godfathers. Yuck.
Not sure if I would like the Chicago style Pizza pie look but
would try it. Can't say I would like it or not since I have
       never had it.

In East Peoria, just before you get to the gambling boat and
hotels there is a place called the Burger Barge. The place is a
dump to look at but they have got the best burgers around.

It's remarkable - and quite tragic - how much garbage food
       people consume.
