Back to Freddy Peralta for a moment, hypothetically.
Deeg noted Mason McGwire pulled from his start tonight.
Okay, any thoughts on this:
Cubs get Peralta and Brazoban. Mets get Triantos, Jonny Long,
McGwire.
Brazoban has three years of control thru 2029. Kind of a nice
reliever. Works at 96.
Mets need IFers. Really bad at 1B. Nice landing spot for Long.
Yeah, Mets would want Pedro Ramirez instead of Triantos, I know.

I'm kinda thinking Peralta is kinda washed. Maybe it's just a
partial season, but "Fastball Freddy" doesn't seem to have that
much of a fastball anymore. Just a JAG fastball now. I think
his reputation exceeds his present value, but I feel like his
price might exceed his actual value. If you're getting him for
small price, I guess that's OK. But my appetite to pay steep
for a #5-starter JAG is small.

Craig, curious why you feel that way when Statcast says velocity
on all his pitches is pretty much right there with his career
norms.

Guessing that Peralta’s trade cost won’t be huge, as a pending
FA. Don’t see him as any kind of savior but as a likely upgrade
and maybe a guy who can start a post-season game and be
effective.
Beats me why so poor this season so far. Pitched twice against
Cubs this season and looked like the former solid guy to me.
Only seen him one other time. Velo is career typical. Just
getting hit hard.
Not sure why a pitcher who just turned 30 should be “washed.”
Maybe he is, it happens.
Maybe he’s a NYC syndrome guy. That happens too. Mets are dismal
this season. Maybe he caught that bad team bug mixed with NYC
syndrome and Wrigley/Cubs/Counsell atmosphere would turn things
around. Or, maybe he just stinks.
Trade deadline is a terrible time to make a major trade for SP.
Scares me to do that. So, looking for potential upside at a less
scary trade cost. Guessing that Peralta fits there.

Tomi Andracki suggested Bryan Abreu as an option for the Cubs.
Given that his velocity has cratered and he's an impending FA
with ERA/FIP in the 5s the cost should be negligible, but unless
they have some idea what caused the drop and think they can fix
it he looks like another dumpster dive at this point.

Connelly Early traded to the Nats for Curtis Mead. Wonder what
you would have had to add to Shaw to get that done.
