Peralta would be our G1 starter in all likelihood. Doesn't mean
he's worth what it might cost but let's be realistic here -
you're starting Boyd or Imanaga over a healthy Freddy Peralta?

In this piece from the Athletic, Cubs don't fit for Skubal:
The way they would do it, according to two rival executives
briefed on the Tigers’ thinking, is by trading Skubal for a
controllable starting pitcher plus quality prospects. The
starter would replace Skubal in the rotation, backfilling his
innings but almost certainly providing lesser performance.
Among the pitchers who might fit in such a trade:
       Emmet Sheehan, Los Angeles Dodgers
       Logan Henderson, Milwaukee Brewers
       Ian Seymour, Tampa Bay Rays
       Andrew Painter, Philadelphia Phillies
JR Ritchie or AJ Smith-Shawver, Atlanta Braves
Will Warren or Ryan Weathers, New York Yankees

Bowden with is usual horrible trade idea column. Cubs made the
list trading Shaw and Alcantara for Wacha.

Bowden is a doof but love it or hate it, I could totally see Jed
       making that deal.

Sharma has a column that discusses six possible pitching targets
       for the Cubs.

If the Cubs traded Bregman to the Brewers, it would help a lot.

Two of the pitchers Sharma mentions are Soriano and Detmers from
       the Angels.
Rosenthal has a piece up today discussing them, noting that
Soriano hasn’t been all that good over his last 14 starts and
has a history of TWO TJ surgeries and that Detmers was a
reliever last season and teams are concerned he might run out of
gas soon with his big bump in innings this season.
Rosenthal also says Angels want a young catcher and he
specifically mentions Owen Ayers as possibly appealing to
       Angels. Yikes! No, please.
I’m still in the Freddy Peralta camp, another guy Sharma
mentions. A rental with upside is fine by me.
Get the controllable SP this coming off-season when market will
be bigger and Hoyer not as desperate as during trade deadline
crunch. And not interested in trading Ayers, nor another Ronny
Cruz-for-Soroka type deal in 11th hour before the deadline bell
       rings. Let’s be smart.
