Scenario 1:
The Mets call and say they are looking to package Freddy Peralta
and Luke Weaver.
What should we submit as our best offer?

With Peralta you're betting on a rental who's been mediocre all
season returning to form over the course of two months. I would
be very judicious in what I offered for him. Weaver is a good
setup man with a year of control, so obviously adds some value
to the deal. Maybe Shaw and Kepley.

Kepley is a trade candidate but Mets are said to have five of
their players off-limits….and three of their five are OFers. So,
guessing that Kepley is unlikely to be a fit there.
Shaw is a 3-WAR player (averaging career bWAR and fWAR) who has
a bunch of control years and is way too valuable to trade for a
rental SP not named Skubal. Cubs should, and guessing will, hold
on to him until eventually can find a match for a similarly
controllable SP.
Think that vis a vis Mets Cubs should just focus on Peralta.
Weaver would be a good get, but makes a trade much harder to
pull off, especially at $12.5 in 2027 knowing that Cubs hate to
pay a non-closer reliever that kind of money.
If Mets actually want Kepley for Peralta, would consider that.
Triantos or Long as alternatives. Mets probably like somebody in
Cubs system now in A ball too who’s down the ladder. Not too
interested in trading Ramirez for a rental either but would not
shock me if Cubs offered him up—maybe if Mets added a lesser
reliever.

Unless we're talking about acquiring Skubal, I'm not too
interested in trading for a starting pitcher. Anybody else you
get you'll be looking to pull in the fifth inning of a playoff
game, if not earlier.
If we can, let's add two or three relievers who we'll be willing
to pitch in the later innings of a playoff game.
While they've shown a lot of moxie, I'm not very interested in
having Trent Thornton or Tyler Ferguson pitching leverage
innings in a playoff game. And, let's be honest, pretty much
all playoff innings are "leverage".
Unfortunately, Jed's top bullpen acquisitions - Harvey and Maton
- are likely to be useless in the postseason.

I think you can get a rental SP you might use in the postseason,
somebody like Gray or Bubic, without giving up an absolute ton.
Gray specifically may be in doubt now that Boston is playing
decent but you have to at least consider it.

Here's another name to consider for the Cubs: Jack Flaherty.
They've had rumored interest in the past. Topline numbers suck,
but peripherals suggest bad luck both this season and last.
Velocity is fine and still striking out a ton of guys. As a
rental I can't imagine the cost would be astronomical and he
might easily wind up a top-4 SP for the Cubs.

Agree with you, Jeff. I'd prioritize relief help. For example,
with Mets, I'd rather add Weaver than Peralta.
Playoffs are predominantly 3-starters. 4th starter might get
two starts if you both roll to the World Series, and have long
series. To me, unless you get a clear upgrade on your top-3, a
trade isn't worth spending much for your playoff rotation. And
the price for a clear top-3 playoff starter, that price is too
exorbitant for my tastes. I hope we don't bother.
You aren't going to get a high-end starter without paying a
zillion in prospect value. Peralta hanging at 4.66 ERA, 15 HR.
Flaherty, 4.48, averaging 4.57 IP/start. To me those now seem
to be JAG guys. Assad is 4.11, the highest of his career, and
that largely built off a couple of disaster outings. (Applies
to most pitchers.). But yeah, on a given playoff game, seems to
me random whether you'll get a better start from Flaherty,
Peralta, Assad, Taillon, Cabrera, Rea, or maybe even Peterson.
Heh heh, for all I know, you might even get a better start from
Caple or Beck, who knows? And regardless of which of those 6
you'd choose, I don't think you'll be thinking
"our-starter-is-better" no matter which of Dodgers, Brewers, or
Braves best-three-starters you'll face.
I'm not very motivated for rotation.

Indirectly, adding a starter pushes somebody to relief. I think
replacing Assad with Taillon downgrades the rotation. But Assad
might end up being super valuable in relief. Beats me, maybe
adding an outside starter would push Peterson to situational
relief; no reason to expect so, but perhaps he'd be better than
Pomeranz or Thielbar.
