I'm not sure I really see much point. Need to pitch 9 innings
to win a game. Starters will sometimes but rarely go more than
6. If the bullpen needs to cover 2-3 (or 4) innings per win,
Hodge can only pitch some of those. Whether he pitches the 8th
or 9th, other guys are still going to need to pitch the other
innings. If Pressly-Hodge are going to be asked to cover two
innings, the sequence really doesn't matter.
Two add-on thoughts:
1. There is pressure associated with "closing", and for
9th-inning hitters. Pressly's stuff isn't going to be great in
either inning, but it may be that the pressure won't compromise
him. And perhaps hitters are almost more likely to get
impatient and chase his junk in the 9th than they might be in
the 8th? Might he be worse in the 8th than in the 9th?
Conversely, Hodge has control challenges. Might he NOT thrive
under the added pressure of closing, and might he do worse in
the 9th than in the 8th? Might perhaps be just as well to keep
it as is?
2. There is a lot of status with closer. To reposition Pressly
from "closer" to 8th-inning setup, that would be a big move that
would draw a lot of attention. But if you did reposition him
into the 8th inning role, it's not quite as obvious is he starts
sharing the 8th inning, or starts getting used in 7th inning,
etc.. So *IF* he's pitching himself down the bullpen ladder,
down or outside of the circle-of-trust, it's probably a lot
easier to further diminish his usage once he's already been
taken out of closer than that first step of bumping from
9th-inning to 8th-inning role. So perhaps their is advantage of
getting the not-the-closer decision made sooner rather than
later. If he was relocated out of the closer role, then perhaps
his usage therafter could be more easily readjusted based on
merit?

Perhaps Keller and Merryweather will be viable late inning
options. That would allow them to keep Pressly on a short leash
should he continue to struggle.

Cubs lead 7-1 in the 7th. Boyd with 6 shutout innings. Pearson
got knocked around yet again.

Nice game. Good pitching, Boyd was good. Keller was good.
Defense terrific as usual, again superior to Padres. Cubs had a
zillion baserunners, could have scored a lot more with a couple
of timely hits. Saw only parts yesterday, but Cubs didn't seem
to hit anything solid while I was watching. Today they were
whacking rockets right and left, even if most got caught. Nice
win!

You see a lot of guys separate their shoulders on dives like
Happ made on that catch - luckily he's OK. Helluva play for
sure.

Cubs have been winning in part because of clean defense. Lose
today as Turner just whiffs on a throw to 1B that would have
been the 3rd out of the 9th inning. Easy play, he just missed a
throw that was a little low, but wasn't in the dirt or anything.
Run was set up, of course, by Pressly walking the first batter
of the inning. Nibbled around and walked the #9 hitter in front
of Tatis, and several of his pitches to the first batter missed
badly. He'd have walked him even more quickly if the ump hadn't
called a strike on a pitch more than a baseball out of the
strike zone. Really gross walk, but still would have gotten out
of it if Turner hadn't whiffed on the double-play throw. Bummer
way to lose.
