The play that I assume prompted this post had a ~30% catch
possibility per Statcast, and I doubt that factors in what it
means to be fast-approaching the brick wall at Wrigley in early
April, before the ivy has had any chance to grow in.
And PCA just coasted into the catch.
       Absurd defender.

No easy 9th for Pressly today.
He has to get through Machado, Bogaerts, and Merrill...

PCA saves at least one run (and perhaps 2, given Merrill's speed
and the chance for a little league HR) with an outrageous diving
stop on a very difficult, short-hop, tailing line drive from
       Merrill.
2 on, 1 out, Pressly not looking great.

Whew, Pressly K's Cronenworth looking on a FB down and in, where
a lot of lefties *love* the ball. Looks like it was supposed to
be up and in, but Pressly missed quite a bit, and think it took
       Cronenworth by surprise.
Cubs get a great win over a very good team, but Pressly has to
find better command if he's going to be successful. Game
conditions today certainly rough, but it's also a continuation
of the poor performance we've seen from him so far...

After the game, looks like Pressly gleefully saying to Amaya "I
fucking told you, I fucking told you."
Seems the call for 3-1 FB may have come from Pressly.
Even though he's not been good early, glad to see that
confidence from him. He's going to need it if he's to be an
       effective, late-inning BP arm.

Cardinals lose, Cubs in 1st place.
Good defense by the Cubs. Again. PCA grab against the brick
wall. PCA diving attempt at Merrill's hit, but one-hopping it
anyway, the risk did no harm. Hoerner made a really good play,
just barely got guy out. Dansby handled an infield-in throw to
the plate cleanly, and Cubs executed the run-down quickly and
unambiguously, hitter never had chance to advance to 2nd base.
Shaw made a good play in the 9th.
By contrast, Padres error let in 3rd run. And kinda thinking
that if they had Cubs-level defense, they'd not have allowed the
tiebreaking run either? Given how ancient and slow Turner is,
might Bogaerts have been able to throw Turner out at 1st rather
than failing to force Suzuki at 2B, on the tie-breaking run?
Kinda thinking that Dansby would have gotten an out on that
play, had he been in Bogaert's place.

       Imanaga just keeps delivering.
Pressly's struggles are obviously a huge concern anyway, but all
the more so given the Cubs' absolutely brutal April schedule.
You would think after the Neris debacle last season Counsell
wouldn't let the same thing play out again. But then you would
have said the same about Jed and bullpen construction, and look
       what happened.

Post-game, Pressly said that final pitch was in a “perfect spot”
which would be an odd thing to say if he actually missed his
       spot.
Pressly was working Cronenworth mostly with off-speed, so a 94
FB in on him fooled him. Gotta outthink the hitter when throwing
2/3 off-speed stuff in an inning. Don’t think Amaya wanted ball
up—initially held glove up but then dropped glove as Pressly
started delivery. Amaya does that at times in other situations
       too.
Pressly’s command today was off. Walking Bogaerts with a 2-run
lead was terrible. Can’t do that. Remains to be seen what kind
of year we get out of Pressly.
