The Dodgers' never-ending quest for higher jersey numbers brings
#96 Landon Knack in to start the sixth inning. Kelly is up to
get another rally started. But he grounds to shortstop.
I keep getting confused because the Dodgers are wearing white
and the Cubs gray, but this is the bottom of the sixth and the
Cubs are the home team.
And Berti has a hit up the middle! We've scored one run in each
of the last three innings; this time let's get more. Having the
speedy Berti on base should help, and we're back to the top of
the order.
Happ lifts a foul ball just inside the netting and Muncy can't
get it; without netting he would have been able to reach it,
though years ago he would have easily gotten it, as those stands
are right near the field and weren't there in the past.
Suzuki up with two outs and a man on. Knack gets him in a hole
right away as Seiya fouls some pitches off. And he strikes out
to end the inning. Still 6-3.

Julian Merryweather in for the seventh, with Berti, Swanson, and
Busch turning a nice double play. Going to the bottom of the
seventh with the score still 6-3.

Porter Hodge to pitch the eighth. Berti with a nice play on a
ball that looked like it was going to find the gap. And he gets
a swinging strikeout to keep the Dodgers off the board again.
Going to the bottom half of the eighth in what is the exact
opposite of a home game for the Cubs (how are both of these
games home games?). Could sure use a rally here.

Is it really worth sacrificing 2 home games from the schedule in
order to present the Cubs as an alternate destination to the
Dodgers for cost controlled Japanese talent which will help
Rickett's goal of breaking even?

Kirby Yates gets us out in the eighth, with Carson Kelly's
two-out single the only action. Berti could not get his fourth
straight hit, popping to Edman at second to end the inning.
Fans are doing the Wave in the Tokyo Dome. On to the ninth.

Ryan Pressly to pitch the ninth. Nice grab by Berti to get the
first out. Now he walks Rojas and the fans erupt as Ohtani
comes into the on-deck circle. A double play would keep him
there; let's see what Pages does.
And Pressly walks him. Two men on for Ohtani. Fans were
disappointed when Counsell intentionally walked him last time
up. Now he gets to hit, and there's a conference at the mound
with Hottovy coming out.
And Pressly walks him unintentionally, missing badly on ball
four outside. Bases loaded with one out. This could turn ugly
if Pressly doesn't turn things around.

Yes, but our decision to trade for Pressley rather than signing
Yates looks great. He got out of the inning but walked 3 with
most pitches nowhere near the zone.

Pressly bears down and gets a double play to end the inning.
Suzuki to bat second in the ninth. I would love to see him at
the center of a huge game-winning rally.

Vesia to try and close it out for the Dodgers.
Happ swings at the first pitch and pops out in foul territory.
Suzuki up, and swings at a terrible pitch low and inside. Now
he takes a close pitch just high to make the count full. And a
foul ball, and another. Maybe he can get a hit and be on the
basepaths as we get a rally started.
Nope, he whiffs on a fastball down the middle.
Tucker with a good at bat, hitting some fouls, taking two-strike
pitches outside the zone. And he lines one to the left field
wall for a double! Just a few feet from being a homer, but I'll
take the baserunner.
Justin Turner (age 40; I hadn't known) is pinch hitting. No
outs left to give away. Great at-bat as he takes several
pitches outside the zone from Vesia. 3-1 count. Ball four; he
walks him!
Tying run is coming to the plate. How amazing would it be if we
could tie this up. Vidal Brujan is running for Turner at first.
Shaw up to bat. It's all up to him.
He takes a strike on the inside corner. Vesia is laboring.
Hard grounder to shortstop... the throw... he's out! Very close
play but the Dodgers have won.
6-3 the final, and, ninth-inning rally aside, it didn't feel
that close.
