Sasaki is cruising but somehow Berti legs out an infield hit on
a weak grounder to third. Very close play at first but he's
safe.
One out for Happ and he takes two balls to start the at-bat.
Now a pickoff and Berti gets back. They saw him steal easily
yesterday; maybe he can do it again. Now ball three to Happ.
And Berti steals! Safe easily again!
Happ swings at a pitch in the dirt to run the count full, but
doesn't go for the next pitch in the same spot, and gets ball
four. First and second with one out, and there's a conference
at the mound. Suzuki up next; this is what the fans are here to
see.
With one ball, Suzuki swings at a low pitch and nicks it foul.
Now ball two inside. And ball three way inside. Look for your
pitch, Seiya!
And he takes low and away for ball four. Bases loaded for our
new power hitter , Kyle Tucker. And Kyle takes one low and
away.
Pitching coach Mark Prior calls the bullpen to get someone
throwing. The Japanese announcers mention that he pitched for
us.
Big swing on a thigh-high fastball and it slices foul. Now
Sasaki misses big again, low and away. 2-1 count on Tucker. 98
MPH low and in, 3-1 count. And Roki misses low and inside and
walks in a run!
3-1, Dodgers, bases still loaded; Busch is next.
First pitch is 97 MPH and just barely above the zone for ball
one. Now Roki paints the outside corner to even the count.
Next one is in the same spot and Busch slices it foul. Huge
moment here for Busch and the Cubs.

And Sasaki puts a 97-MPH fastball right on the black, on the
outer edge of the plate, and gets a called strikeout. Wow.
That's some control.
Shaw next, and Sasaki blows it past him for a strikeout to end
the inning. Very disappointing pair of at-bats.

Now a two-run homer for Kike to make it 5-1. Announcers are
gushing.

Veteran Luis Garcia is coming in to replace Sasaki.
Swanson flies to center. PCA strikes out, as the announcers
continue to say "Crew" and not "Crow".
Kelly works a two-out walk and is on base for the first time.
Berti next and Garcia gets a very close call on a low inside
pitch. Now a hit up the middle! First and second for Happ, but
there are two outs. Suzuki is on deck. No better time for a
rally!

Base hit to left! Kelly scores; it's 5-2! First and second for
Suzuki, and the runner at second is the speedy Berti.
Dodgers have number 86 warming in the bullpen. Garcia has been
struggling with control this inning, but he gets his first two
pitches right down the middle to put Suzuki in a 0-2 hole.
Now a high pitch that Suzuki starts to offer at but stops his
swing. And the broadcast has gone to commercial. Was the first
base umpire's call reversed?

Nate Pearson is in for the fifth inning and is hitting 100 on
the radar. He's got Pages in an 0-2 hole but misses with the
next two. Now Pages fouls one off at 99. And he throws another
99-MPH pitch right on the outside edge, where Sasaki threw one
to get out of trouble a few innings ago. One out for Ohtani.
And Ohtani hits a home run to center. It looked like a fan
might have reached over the wall to prevent PCA from catching
it, and the umpires are reviewing it. But the Dodgers are
celebrating like there's no doubt. You can clearly see the fan
reaching over on the replay, but it's called a homer.

Jack Dreyer is making his major league debut for the Dodgers.
He gets two quick outs but Shaw gets a hit. Runner at first for
Swanson.
And Swanson smacks a double into the left-field corner to bring
Shaw all the way around! On the throw home, Dansby moves to
third, sliding in under the tag.
PCA hitting now. Great to see the Cubs not go down without a
fight. But he's quickly in an 0-2 hole, with Dreyer hitting his
spots on the edges of the zone. Now a 94-MPH fastball down the
middle and Pete fouls it off. Some "PCA" signs in the stands!
Another fastball letter high and he fouls it off again. Next
pitch is away and he takes it. The TV focuses on the long name
on his back again.
And he flies to right to end the threat. But we get a run back;
it feels much later, but it's only the top of the sixth.

Caleb Thielbar makes his debut for us. I hadn't known he was
38. I also thought the "th" was the German pronunciation, like
in "Thomas", but the Japanese announcers are calling him
"Shirubaa", which is the substitution they make with the English
"th" as in "thing". They're also saying "Caleb" with a regular
"a", as in "Calvin", so who knows.
However he says his name, he gets three quick outs, keeping the
deficit at three. Kelly makes a nice grab on a foul pop with
lots of movement to end the inning.
