Why not do both?

Tice said Dalman is going to cost a pretty penny, and if they
invest a high draft pick at C, that doesnt play well together.

We still have Ricky Stromberg on the PS as well…

It looks like this isn’t a year for great centers in the draft
so maybe third round at most. At some point they need a safety
to back up Brisker better than Elijah Hicks.

I think it's pretty likely that Johnson is going to want a
veteran center.
I know we all have PTSD from having watched him get run over by
Jeffery Simmons and T'Vondre Sweat in the opener, but are we
sure we couldn't live with one more year of Coleman Shelton?
Keeps some continuity for Caleb. One thing in Shelton's favor
is that he started every game and played almost every snap.
Get Bates and Stromberg plenty of training camp reps at the
position. Draft a center if a good value presents itself.

I was listening to Nate Tice on Hoge and Jahns podcast. The
thought of Will Campbell draft and put him at Center came across
my mind. They say Campbell is highly intelligent and would
point out blitzes and change protection for QB from the LT
position. Also he is supposed top level leader. My son said
dad draft center at 10 is too high. I responded what if he has
10 year career with 5 AllPro years? I think it should be a
serious consideration.

It might work out. I just wish the Bears would get someone who
played center for their whole career to play center for once
rather than using players from other positions all the time
(jack of all trades types). Last time the line was any good was
when they had a dedicated center (Olin Kreutz)......

@JFowlerESPN
The #Bears are indeed targeting free agent TE Durham Smythe, per
sources. Seven-year Dolphin overlapped with Ben Johnson in 2018.

@danwiederer
I won’t be surprised if the Bears work toward addressing some of
their TE holes/depth with veteran Durham Smythe, released by the
Dolphins last month.

Tight end Durham Smythe has found a new team.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Smythe is signing a one-year deal
with the Bears.
Smythe, 29, spent his first seven seasons with the Dolphins
before the club released him last month. He appeared in all 17
games for Miami in 2024, catching nine passes for 53 yards. He
was on the field for 32 percent of offensive snaps and 30
percent of special teams snaps.
New Bears head coach Ben Johnson was Miami’s receivers coach
during Smythe’s rookie season.
In 112 career games with 74 starts, Smythe has recorded 132
receptions for 1,228 yards with three touchdowns.
