Agreed…if we’re not in Scott’s ballpark, Yates is the best
       option…

Tom and Jed have lost BN, remarkably.

valuations in the sport, and (3) maintaining one of the priciest

The Ricketts family does not deserve the Cubs

That Nationals released Finnegan rather than face $8-ish in arb
salary perhaps says something about how they perceived his
value, and about his price point. If the Cubs were to sign a
guy like that, I'd think he would have opportunity to possibly
close, but no strong promise. Giving Hodge the chance to stick
as closer, and having a guy like Finnegan return to setup work
       would seem pretty plausible.

Finnegan is that NBA guy people who know nothing about
basketball think is a good player because he scores 20 PPG
chucking 25 shots a night for a tanking team who has no one else
       who can score.
4.24 FIP, 1.32 WHIP. He’s just a guy. How much pressure is there
closing games for a team trying to lose? If there’s such a thing
as the arch-typical Jed “headline” move, Finnegn would be it.
       Just sign a good player.

Boyd, Finnegan, Kelly.............. Really working hard
to get to that 90 win threshold.

There are other relievers still out there preferable over
Finnegan but watched Finnegan quite a bit as a Nat and he’s a
bulldog on the mound. Outperforms his FIP every season of his
career, typically by a wide margin.
For me, he’s better suited in a non-closer role because gave up
some devastating 9th inning homers that Nats could not recover
       from.
A workhorse type guy, good for 65 appearances, with 97 velo fb
and a split. Can see why Nats didn’t want to pay him $8.6
projected—— or maybe more as arb process not always predictable.
Nats wanted him back—just not at that price. Everybody knows
that his hard hit rate and avg exit velo is very poor but he’s a
better-than-average reliever overall. Wherever he lands, would
expect him to outperform his FIP once again.

I believe we call that an "Orlando Woolridge". In some circles,
it may also be referred to as a "Reggie Theus".

A.J. Minter is one of the most popular free agent LH relievers
       among teams at the
       @MLB
       Winter Meetings.
The Braves would like to bring him back, and the Cubs and
Rangers are among the clubs with interest.

Chris Getz on a potential Cubs/Sox deal. He and Jed Hoyer live
       near each other:
"We've had conversations about various topics over coffee on
occasion. If there is a match, there is a match. We have to do
what's best for the White Sox. If that means we knock on the
door of the Cubs, so be it. They have a talented (prospect)
group that's working its way to the major leagues. If it can
help the White Sox, we'll do it but there are other org that
have talent that we might match up better with."

Jed Hoyer on top of the market players (like Soto): "There is
nothing that precludes us from being involved in those players.
We did, orgnizationally, decide not to pursue that one. It
doesn't mean in the future we won't but that was one we didn't."
