Cubs draft another college 3B, Cole Mathis Coll. of C, in 2nd
round——a 1B/P Cubs announced as a 3B.
Seems like Cubs looking for 3B prospects.

"Mathis has fringy speed and decent athleticism but is limited
to first base despite his plus arm strength."
Callis. Kantro apparently disagrees?
As usual, a Cape Cod producer.

@ivyfutures
Cole Mathis, second round pick of the Cubs. Another Cape Cod
League stud (11 HR, 1.048 OPS), another data stud in 2024 season
on swing decisions (16% chase, 84% contact). Two very strong
model performers tonight.
He’s another guy with high EV. Kantrovitz has a type.

Keith Law wrote him up outside oh his top 100
Cole Mathis, 1B, College of Charleston
Mathis hits for surprising power, maxing out over 113 mph in
exit velocity, with an ugly, handsy right-handed swing, making
up for it with excellent swing decisions, rarely chasing or
swinging and missing. He was a two-way guy until this year,
throwing 100 innings in his first two years for Charleston. The
results at the plate are good enough to maybe get him into the
third round even with the concerns that his swing won’t work as
well against pro pitching.

Interesting that both are RH. Shaw, Triantos, Alcantara Rojas
RH. Caissie and Ballesteros LH. Hope those lefties make it
somehow.

2019 Kris Bryant played more 3B than anybody else. Seasons
since: Bote, Wisdom-Wisdom-Madrigal.
Clicking on somebody who could handle 3b defensively and hit
besides, that would be pretty helpful.

It clearly looks like the Cubs have been targeting high EV, high
contact, good swing decision guys over the last few drafts.
They both have things to fix with their swings, but that is what
you are paying your development staff for. I think Franklin was
one of the first guys I remembering getting drafted specifically
because of his EV.
Adding power and contact to the system seems like a good plan.
It probably means you are going to sacrifice on other traits,
because if they did everything well they’d be a 1.1 type of guy.

“I think there were a fair amount of college hitters that we
thought would would go off the board quick and they did, and we
weren’t sure how many of those that were at the top of our list
would,” Cubs vice president of scouting Dan Kantrovitz said.
“And, as it turned out, there were a couple. And so I think we
probably ended up having more options at our pick than we
anticipated, which is always good. Cam was somebody that we
prioritized from the beginning,” Kantrovitz said. “He’s somebody
that I think checked a lot of different boxes for us, somebody
that we think can play third base and can stay there and
potentially be really good at it. Hits for power. Hits for
average. We didn’t really see any holes in his game.”… “He
definitely made a lot of progress from his freshman year to
sophomore year,” Kantrovitz said. “We view him as somebody
that’s really still on the upswing, somebody with a pretty steep
trend line of improvement.”
