Cubs have drafted pretty well in the 1st for several years. I
trust Kantrovitz here.

Some analysts say Smith will have to re-work his swing. Highly
recommend reading Longenhagen’s analysis at Fangraphs The board
about Smith’s swing deficiencies. Think that Law has said
something similar.
That’s okay when the player has huge raw power. This is what
your player development staff is for.
ESPN chart they put up after the selection illustrated all the
ground balls he hits. Read that in context with the Longenhagen
comments——stuff to work on.
Obviously, a key is whether can stay at 3B. This seems mostly
about whether he just gets too big to play the position. On that
matter, one analyst compared him to Miguel Sano but Sano was
notoriously out of shape for much of his career. Hopefully,
Smith will work harder to deal with his size.
Had a huge Cape Cod summer last year. That counts a lot,
positively.
Presumably, will sign for close to slot.

More projection than the typical 1st round college bat.
Definitely a project.

Rankings by different media sources:
#7 Fangraphs
#14 MLB Pipeline
#16 BA
#17 ESPN/Kiley
#19 Keith Law
So seems pretty much right in the area where people expected.
Not a surprise reach or anything. Like dusty and tico said, no
sure things at 14, and Kantro has seemed to be pretty sensible
with his 1st-round picks. Hope he works out.

trust.

Hoyer/Hawkins and their cronies have jumped the shark,
draft-wise. Really, one of the worst draft choices of the past
quarter century. An absolute abomination. These two must die.
