I thought Alvarez and Caple might have been cheaper, given they
were seniors…unless they could petition for a 5th year…

So, by my count, Cubs would have about $1.1M for 11th rounder HS
guy Lovich, assuming that 4th rounder HS guy Southisene signs at
slot.

Thanks for all the info and analysis, guys. Put differently,
between the $477 underslot combined with the $490 overage,
that's around $967 in over-slot to spend however they choose.
That's a pretty good chunk of discretionary.
I would guess that will not ALL get spend on Lovich? Every year
is different, of course, but Zyhir Hope was Kantro's biggest
3rd-day overslot, and he was still only 250 over. So I'm kinda
guessing Lovich isn't going to get all of the discretionary
dollars and end up $1.1 million.
I'm assuming that Southisene will get a piece of that. Mangus
and/or Risedorph, maybe?

Interesting that other than Southisene, the other guys after
Matthis all took modest subslots. But none very large. Even
the two seniors (8,9) still got $125, and those were the only
two south of $150K 3rd-day money. Makes sense that guys would
have no motive to take a deal much south of $150, unless they
thought they wouldn't get drafted at all. So unless you're
picking guys not projected as draft-worthy, in which case they
probably aren't that talented, I don't imagine trying to get
deals much lower than $125 makes sense.
Hope some of these guys develop well.

Could be.
But would note that Kiley McDaniel said: “Eli Lovich; he was a
late-riser with third-round grades from a few teams.”
Slot for very top of the 3rd round is just over $1M. And, Lovich
seems like one of those guys with a serious college alternative.
So, thinking he may well get very close to $1M.

Southisene, imo, will boil down to how much NIL money UT has for
baseball, and how much is already earmarked for retaining the
remaining members of their championship team or higher ranked
recruits.
A 5’9” MI might not be their top priority…

Yeah, agree on that.
I don't really imagine there is any real question about whether
he's going to sign or not. Kantro would never have allocated
$0.6-1M for a 4th-rounder (I assume some overslot), unless he
fully expected the kid to sign. I assume that if Lovich and
Mangus are already in Mesa, then Southisene probably is too, or
will be soon.
Mechanics requires overslots to sign last. Can't sign them
until the other guys sign first. Need to actually have the
dollars available. *IF* Cam Smith fails his physical, or dies
before he signs, suddenly you don't have the 5% overage dollars.
So due-diligence to get the slot and sub-slot signings done,
have your discretionary overage dollars in hand, and then sign
Lovich and Southisene.
That Southisene did NOT sign with the slot-or-sub guys just
confirms that he's getting at least some overslot. How the
discretionary overslot dollars splits between him and Lovich,
we'll just wait and see.

Interesting that Lovich is reported to be on the way to Mesa to
sign. If so, they must be confident they have the money
available.
