Cubs probably among those teams. 3rd-round grade doesn't imply
3rd-round money, obviously. I'd not be surprised to see the
same kinda $400K like Zyhir Hope got last year, but who knows.

I have no idea how much each draftee will get, but I am pretty
sure that after everyone has signed, the Cubs will have spent
their entire allotment, including the 5% overage. They don't
seem to draft anyone unless they are pretty sure what it will
take to sign them.

Yeah, no suspense these days on "cheap" or "will-they-sign".
They spend to the cap, and they sign everybody. Only question
really is about how they split up the cap, and what insights
that may provide into their internal scouting valuation.

Yeah, MLBPA is steadfast against a salary cap on MLB players but
agreed to a hard salary cap for the draft. No organization goes
over—ever—because of the penalties.
Results in fewer non-signees in higher rounds. Maybe part of
that is because draftees know clubs are working under hard
restraints and know it’s pointless to push too much. At same
time, maybe promotes better communication pre-draft about money
and no surprises.

BA 2025 Mock Draft is out.
Cubs take a catcher in first round! Let the controversy begin.
7. Cubs — Caden Bodine, C, Coastal Carolina
As it stands in mid-July, Bodine seems to have the best contact
skills in the 2025 class. A 5-foot-10, 200-pound switch-hitting
catcher, he has a career .346/.432/.564 slash line with more
walks than strikeouts both years at Coastal Carolina. This
spring, he made contact at an 89% clip with a standout 93%
in-zone contact rate. He pairs those bat-to-ball skills with
soft hands and an above-average, accurate throwing arm behind
the plate.

Seriously, BA is already doing a 2025 mock draft? Is it possible
some people are little overly consumed with baseball analysis?

Baseball mock drafts are pretty much useless for any but the
first 4 or 5 picks in most years, as far as predicting who the
team might take, even in the first round, and meaningless beyond
that. The only value they have for most of us is to see who may
be the generally accepted top half dozen prospects at a
particular time.
In football, where more teams are going to draft according to
need, and where the body of information available is gigantic,
they are often much more useful and accurate.

If you’re into film, fashion, or widgets, you’ll be interested
in what is in production for future consumption. A 2025 mock
draft is just a baseball way to do that. Obviously, the
connection between any player and team is extremely attenuated.
Just a fun thing—like the guy who did a 20-round 2024 Cubs mock
this week.

Cubs VP of Scouting Dan Kantrovitz has some big praise for 11th
round draft pick Eli Lovich (Marquee)
“I don’t want to get too far out in front of myself because we
still have to go through the physical process,” Kantrovitz said
on the latest Cubs Weekly Podcast. “He was committed to
Arkansas, which is a top tier SEC school. So it’s gonna be a
significant buyout – that’s probably a fair expectation. He had
options so at that point, it just comes down to did we save
enough? Did we have enough money going into Day 3 to buy him out
of Arkansas? And I think the answer is yes ….
“He’s a projection type. He’s got this frame that is dripping
with physical projection. It’s something that you look at his
parents and look at his siblings and you look his body and it’s
not unreasonable to expect our high performance team to help him
add about 15 to 20 pounds of good weight over the next few
years. He’s already hitting the ball 107, 108 mph off the bat.
And so you factor in that and it’s gonna just lead to some
strength gains, some exit velocity gains and hopefully that
translates to some home runs on the field.”
