Cubs 18th rounder. This will be an interesting one. Can’t speak
to signability but would go to Oklahoma next year.
RHP Thomas Mangus
@ThomasMangus1 | @NavarroBasebal1
FB: 90-93 | 2650 + max rpm
SL: 80-83
SPLT: 83-84
A big time performance yesterday from the @OU_Baseball recruit.
In a big series for the top spot in conference, Mangus went CG
shutout in Navarro’s 8-0 win. Relied on FB/SL combo and mixed in
a few splits to LHH’s and got a few S/M.

Mangus is 21. Heh heh, I usually think of "Oklahoma recruit" as
being a teenager, not a 21-year-old already!
Doesn't mean he won't be a signability challenge. The
opportunity to both play for a big-time college program might be
a bigger personal dream. Being able to say "I pitched for
Oklahoma, I won a game in the college world series, I had wins
over teams like Arkansas and LSU" might be a better lifetime
legacy than saying "I played pro ball, and got as high as A+, I
had wins over the Beloit Sky Carp and the Great Lakes Loons".

Ambitious doing a 20-round Cubs Mock Draft.
Nice try…. but 0 for 20.
Better luck next year.

So who are the draft picks that our underslot-types are going to
pay for?

Outside of Lovich and maybe Mangus, I’m not sure who else would
fit the description…

Split up some way between Lovich, Southisene, and Cruz, the
three HS picks. Maybe Mangus, although not sure a 21-year-old
average-velocity guy needs overslot?
Lovich, obvious given. Southisene, seems pretty obvious for a
high-profile, well-scouted kid. I think Cruz is the $$
wildcard. Not being on media lists, we might assume he won't
get overslot, and might perhaps get variably under. But I won't
be surprised if he gets full or variably over. Kantro's
comments suggest high ceiling. Kantro's comment that "weren't a
lot of teams early", that would be reflected in the media lists,
which tail behind what scouts are seeing and saying. Cubs
weren't only team at the combine, so if speed, SS-defense, and
exit-velocity were all flashing there, Cubs weren't only team to
notice. May well be that Kantro figured other teams, at least
some, were on him now too. I'm guessing he gets a clean round
$1M. (Guess being the operative word.)
“He’s got a dynamic skill set at a premium position,” Kantrovitz
said. “There’s still projection there, but the ball’s coming off
his bat as hard as anybody at the combine. He’s posting some of
the better in-game running times that we observed. He is coming
off a knee injury last year, so he kind of had a slow ramp-up
earlier this spring. Frankly, I don’t think there were a lot of
teams in there early.”
