Moore appears to be a bat first catcher. He’s a draft-eligible
sophomore.
The MLB pipeline mentions that if teams thought he could be an
average catcher he’d be a top 10 pick.

Moore has a lot of moving parts in a very involved swing.
He's also hitting .255 this year. That doesn't inspire
confidence.

Here is Law’s write-up
Moore is going to end up with a team that values batted-ball
data over performance — he’s had terrible luck at the plate this
spring but he’s not punching out and his contact quality points
to a higher average than he’s had on balls in play. He’s a
below-average defender right now and scouts are mixed on whether
he can stay at catcher; the arm is the worst tool here and his
other deficiencies could improve with different coaching.

JP: If you had to assign a 20-80 grade to this year’s draft
class as a whole, what would it be?
Keith Law: It’s a 40. There have been worse, there could
conceivably be much worse, but this is well below the median for
me.

Moore is a hard pass for me. Hopefully it’s Law trying to sound
smarter than everybody else as usual.

14. Chicago Cubs: Malcolm Moore, C, Stanford
This connection keeps coming up, as the Cubs do lean heavily on
their model, and Moore has excellent batted-ball data. I’ve also
heard them with Christian Moore and Waldschmidt.
Law does mocks off of what he is hearing, not what he would do.
He has Moore rated much lower. Shaw seemed like a really great
target last year. Moore isn’t really exciting me with what is
being written about him.

Mayo put the Cubs back with Cam Smith again the other day. Said
they are also interested in other big college bats Waldschmidt
and Moore.

I’ve been hoping Seaver King would make it to 14 but that seems
increasingly unlikely.

Also, Mayo suggests FSU outfielder Tibbs for the Cubs is a
possibility if he's still available.

Cubs have a dismal history drafting catchers going back to
draft’s inception in 1965.
Never drafted a worthwhile catcher in first few rounds.
Drafted Josh Donaldson as a catcher sandwich first round but he
didn’t stick at the position of course.
Probably best catcher drafted by Cubs was Geovany Soto as a 11th
rounder. Rick Wilkins, a late round pick, had one terrific
season. Joe Girardi, a 5th rounder, played 15 years in big
leagues and accumulated 5 WAR in 15 years.
If Cubs want to take a first round high-risk guy (such as a
catcher), why not instead take a HS pitcher who can throw the
bejesus out of the ball and pray he can stay healthy. Teams
frown on taking a guy like that first 10 overall picks and maybe
Cubs can snag a high ceiling pitcher at #14.
