Watched two half innings this afternoon, lefties Little and
Wieck. Cool for Wieck to be back pitching. Walked first guy,
got the next three, still has that huge curveball. At the
human-interest level, it would be so fun if Wieck bounced back
and ended up being useful, after his heart stuff (??) and his
       surgery.
Little had a pitch or two that went way wild, but otherwise was
in or around the zone. I'm really optimistic that he's going to
be really good, sooner or later.

       Canario has an absolute rifle.

Canario could change the gameplan a tad this year if he plays to
       his potential.

Thanks for posting that clip. Yeah, nice arm!
I've tried to watch several of his AB. I haven't seen him drive
anything, so haven't seen the power. (In minors, the only
swings I ever saw were the HR clips.).
But he's looked very disciplined, and like he's got a good sense
of the strike zone? Doesn't seem like nearly the sometimes wild
pitch-chaser that PCA is, or that I recall from Baez and Corey
Patterson days. Not sure he'll be great at hitting the strikes,
but he's going to take some walks.

There was another clip of Busch scoring on Canario's hit. I was
surprised. Busch is no gazelle, but he's not a draft horse
       either.

His plate discipline has improved quite a lot, and I would say
it's above-average now. Bat speed is elite. He does have a lot
of swing and miss in his game, but that's hardly unusual for top
power prospects. I think Canario has the tools to be a weapon
both at the plate and in the outfield, but it's hard to see him
getting the chance with the Cubs.
One of the nice things about having Counsell in the organization
is that he’s a kind of catcher in the rye - an emergency brake
for dumb organizational decisions (like writing off Morel as a
3B without giving him a real trial). If Counsell sees real
breakout potential in Canario he’ll find a way to get him on the
field (and push against trading him).

I watched a Ballesteros AB in the 9th inning today. He whiffed
badly, chasing a low chase pitch that was nowhere close.
But I was mostly looking just to get a look at the physique. A
Cub source supposedly said that if he could lose 20 pounds, he
might be pretty good defensively. I've had the hope that just
like college football freshmen remodel their physiques by junior
year, that if he's got the same drive and motivation that
thousands of college footballs guys have, maybe he'd do likewis?

Not sure what he looked like last year, but in the brief AB my
impression was that he has exceptionally big (maybe strong?)
haunches. But didn't look like he had any noticable beer-belly.
Very unusual body shape, for sure, especially for a baseball
player. No clue whether a guy can possibly have the quickness
and mobility behind the plate to play big-league catcher with
that frame. But, it didn't really look like there's a lot of
"overweight" that could be shed, or beer-belly that could be
       hardened.

I wonder if Caissie is going to have the same high heat hole
       that Mervis dealing with.
Caissie has been late on high fastballs. The double was on a
middle-in pitch that he could handle. That’s fine but would like
to see more on the high heat. Big league pitchers are merciless
       when see a batting hole.

Caissie with a 3-run oppo to put the Cubs up 7-6 over the White
       Sox.
