Justin was a class act. Justin has tremendous potential. He is
only 24. Steelers may have made a great trade.
However after hearing everything about Caleb Williams I
understand "why" the Bears have to take that chance. He may be
Montana, Brady, etc. They compare him to LeBron, Jordan, etc.
in other sports. Will Caleb live up to that, who the heck
knows, but what if he does.
I personally am ok taking a swing at the next great QB. Fields
IMO will never be that. Can he be above average top 7-12 QB in
league, I think yes, can he be #1 highly unlikely.
Still think he was worth way more than 2025 6th round pick.
However Bears got stuck and I understand why they dealt him.
Mentally prepare the team and the fan base for the inevitable.

I think Poles has shown to be very stubborn in mishandling the
timing of the Justin trade and keeping yet another lame duck
coach to oversee yet another rookie QB. Hopefully Caleb is good
enough to break the wheel and lead this team to the playoffs.
The Bears have the talent and no excuses.

I've never understood this. What - other than dopey media
speculation and/or fan desire - makes anyone think that Eberflus
is anything close to being a lame duck?

Fan desire on my part. Guilty as charged.
I know he has 100% full backing of the GM and he is definitely
carrying himself in that way.

I understand that.
I'm an Eberflus supporter. Guilty as charged.
We let players develop, but we are resistant to let coaches do
the same.

It was hard admitting that Fields was never going to be one of
the top QBs. He didn't have to be Mahomes, but it didn't look
like he was ever going to be at the level of any of the QBs in
the playoffs.
I think the QBs that became available in free agency, the
strong QB draft class and Poles hesitation to deal Fields early
on for whatever reason contributed to the underwhelming
compensation the Bears are receiving in next year's draft.
Mac Jones went for a 6th this year. Trey Lance for a 4th.
Steelers got a 3rd and 4th for Kenny Picket and two 2025 7th
rounders.
And the Bears get a conditional 6th in 2025?

Some context to add here from my reporting: In addition to
Pittsburgh, there were 5 teams that reached out to the Bears to
gauge their interest on a Fields trade, but the majority of
those teams envisioned Fields as a backup. Chicago wanted to use
the parameters of the Sam Darnold trade (2021 6th, 2022 2nd and
4th) for compensation but had to shift towards a different
return after that didn't get yield a deal from inquiring teams.

The Bears had an additional offer with stronger draft capital
from a team with an established starter, per a source, but chose
to send Fields to Pittsburgh with the hope of putting the
25-year-old in a position to continue his development -- first
as a backup to Wilson and eventually as a starter. In
Indianapolis, Poles said he wanted to "do right" by Fields,
which included not keeping him on a team with a rookie and
finding a spot where he could continue developing. In
Pittsburgh, Fields will have that chance.

The interesting thing is that they traded Fields before USC's
pro day and before their 30 visit with Caleb.
So, if Caleb has a major medical problem or if he has
psycopathic tendencies or he takes his dick out on a
merry-go-round, they still would have moved on from JF.
