Speaking of Shohei, I noticed on Fantrax that he was split into
2 players. Did we do that or is that the Fantrax way?

Actually, Todd, I was going to address that within the next
week. Most leagues will have Ohtani as two players. One
hitter, one pitcher. I hadn't said anything yet because they
announced that they would do that before he had TJ so I wondered
if they would go through with it. As a result when we draft, he
will have to be drafted as one or the other with the other still
draftable later. I would guess that Ohtani the hitter will go
quickly, while the pitcher may not since he will probably be on
the DL all season.

I still like the idea of one team getting both sides of Ohtani.
But they have to use their first and second round picks to get
him, and they'd have to use two keeper spots to keep him in the
future.
He'd also have to be used however the Dodgers use him. So for
2024, the pitcher version could go on the IL and the hitter
version could be active. But once he starts pitching again, the
pitcher version would have to be activated. You also couldn't
drop just one version of him unless it was announced he was
permanently giving up pitching (or hitting). That would mean
that if he ended up just being a bad #5 starter after this
latest surgery, you'd have to continue using him in a SP spot
unless you were also willing to drop the hitter version.

He will be picked as two different players. As I've discussed
with other fantasy guys, it's the only thing that makes long
term sense.

Actually, since Ohtani the pitcher will probably be on the IL
all season, he may be available in the 2nd round. What if
Owner X has both Ohtani's and he has an opportunity to really
improve his team by trading one. That option has to be there.

Jordan Wicks is available for a 10/11 swap if anyone wants to
take a chance on a young pitcher.

I need to explain this to those people who have been in this
league less than 10 years. When this league started, there
were no minor leagues. About 7-10 years in, there were numerous
requests to begin one, primarily because there were a few owners
who tried the strategy of loading up with young talent during
the draft who were not yet major leaguers. That was legal.
That was also disastrous for those who had key players miss
Opening Day. They ended up dumping the youth or taking zero
points for some time. The league passed the rule that anyone
not making the Opening Day roster, was dropped to discourage the
practice. But the league listened to the arguments for minors
and we finally created them, unfortunately we still had some
owners load up with minor leaguers and then try to put them in
their minors. It defeated the intent of creating minors so
teams could build and weakened the minor league draft to a point
it was worthless. Anyhow, about 10 years ago we moved the minor
draft in front of the major and it has worked much better. You
can draft players who might make the major this year without
fear of losing them. BTW, we also allowed minor league slots to
be traded, but that was a clusterf... I may have some of that
history misstated but there are enough old guys here to
straighten it out.
So...the league has changed, many times. We are not resistant
to change, just change that the majority can't abide. BTW: The
league started with 20 teams. Imagine how finding that 2nd
Catcher worked then! Of course, I think we only had 23 roster
spots then. And, to make changes, it had to be 75% vote, not
just majority. A long way since 1998.
[/quote] My thinking is sort of the opposite...instead of being
stuck with an 11th round no hit good glove SS, you might be able
to pick up an obscure SS whom you did not know about 2 weeks
earlier that just made news about how he is staying in AAA for a
month to get seasoned...otherwise, you have to give up your
first waiver a little early in the year...

Yes. That's a possibility. But it's better than what history
has taught us. So the rule all of us voted on and
overwhelmingly was passed, stays.

Hi all, looking forward to the start of the 2024 season!
For anyone looking to add to the depth of talent on their
roster, I'd love to connect. I'm looking either to trade players
for picks, or to bundle 2 or 3 guys together to get an upgrade.
Position players on my team that are available include:
Christian Yelich
Stephen Kwan
Ha-Seong Kim
Jorge Polanco
Isaac Paredes
Alexander Canario
And for pitching, I have both enough depth and uncertainty that
I'm willing to listen on basically anyone.
