That’s a legitimate point. I waffled between 3B and SS during HS
and college. I wasn’t the super athlete that normally plays SS
so I was made a 3B. My coaches said I was our best SS but didn’t
move or look like a SS. I was very comfortable at 3B. When I was
finally moved to SS the position seemed easy as I had so much
time before the ball got to me, time to move with my throws,
charging the ball brought a line toward 1B etc….. When I was
occasionally asked to play 3B again I wasn’t nearly as
comfortable there after having played SS.
At the end of the day a SS is likely your best fielder and
should be able to play any position on the diamond (other than P
or C) due to his athleticism. It just may take a lot of time and
reps to get someone comfortable moving from SS to 3B but with
work, willingness and desire I think most SS can become GG
caliber defensive players at 3B due to their athleticism. They
just need to accept the position change and put in the work.

A rumor is a currently circulating story or report of uncertain
or doubtful truth.
I think a random teacher suggesting something about Bichette
qualifies as a rumor.
You are welcome to buy into the discussion or not. I have read
on the internet that the Cubs are the favorites for Ohtani and a
package deal with Yamamoto. Do I think that is accurate? Nope,
but it’s still fun (for me) to read and consider.

Whaddaya know, Morosi is also talking up Bichette-Cubs rumors
(and quoting Cozzi in doing so). Someone check with Reb and see
if he’ll approve discussing it now.

A more in depth discussion.
"Did I see the KFidds tweet when it first dropped a couple days
ago? I did. Did I ask around to see if there was any smoke
there? I did (mostly hearing that, yes, it may have been a light
conversation, but don’t go nuts). And then did I see the Matt
Cozzi tweet yesterday? I did. But it wasn’t until Morosi – who
was the one on Bichette-Cubs last year – decided to share that
tweet with his own commentary that I thought, OK, maybe this
does have sufficient smoke to at least share and discuss. Don’t
go crazy with it, though, because I think it’s still pretty
light (and unlikely)."

Talked about this kind of thing recently too. Some folks here
don’t or can’t distinguish between “reporting” and
“speculating.” Probably a failure of our school system.
Morosi too is speculating, not reporting. His Bichette comments
a year ago were him “wondering” if you go back and read it. I
speculated about a Suarez trade couple weeks ago. Same thing.
Speculating. Now Morosi speculating how such a thing might
impact a Ohtani signing.
For the third time, this is all fine. i don’t care. Discuss,
discuss. It’s silly, but discuss.
My theory is that all of you know it’s silly but it’s a Guilty
Pleasure thing to take somewhat seriously a HS English guy
talking about a good player coming to Cubs. You know it’s BS but
don’t like someone pointing out your guilty pleasure. Fine, I
get it. Like most guilty pleasures, it’s harmless.

Agree, rumor and speculation are pretty distinct.
Both are fun to consider, but speculation seems more fun or
worthwhile when there is some logic involved, some element of
plausibility and mutual advantage. Bichette seems to have none.

On Craig’s logic point re. Bichette, this is what you’d have to
believe on Bichette to Cubs:
1. A capable SS coming off his age 25 season—after just seeing
four SSs get monster contracts previous off-season—is going to
buy into moving off SS to play 3B. This is absurd. No, Bichette
had no veto rights, but everybody within the industry knows you
don’t move a marquee veteran player off SS at that age without
his buy-in. Yes, Baez temporarily split time between 2B and SS
and ARod moved to 3B but those were very different
circumstances. Bichette is not moving to 3B while his free
agency looms.
2. A club without a SS need is going to outbid in trade value
other clubs who do have a SS need, in order to play the player
at 3B. Seriously? When Yankees got ARod, they were only club
ready to take on the monster contract so were able to get ARod
for a bargain trade price, even-up for Soriano, good grief.
Discuss, discuss, all in fun, as I just did. But, maybe don’t
get bent all out of shape when somebody points out it’s not a
report but guilty pleasure speculation rooted in a post from a
guy who makes a living teaching HS English.

The Bleacher Nation guys have broken multiple Cubs moves and the
confirmed the Cubs have asked about Bichette. So I think this
confirms that the English teacher with a podcast has a source,
especially since he’s getting shout outs on MLB network. That
makes it more than speculation. It just makes it an unlikely
rumor, because pulling of a trade for Bichette isn’t easy.
I’m old enough to remember when Cermani started breaking Cubs
moves and certain posters claimed as blogger he couldn’t
possibly have sources and shouldn’t be cited. No one here needs
a lecture about how rumors are unlikely to be right. I’m still
waiting for Jake Peavy and that stupid Orioles second basemen to
be Cubs. (Not directed at Craig).

Brian Roberts!!! :):). Bring back the memories!
No objection to mentioning Bichette rumor. I just don't see how
it makes any mutual sense for the two teams.
Maybe even the report of "Hoyer asked after Bichette" is
interesting in itself? My thinking is that Cubs should mostly
just use their money and hold their best prospects, hold their
fire, and don't mess with any rentals. But *IF* the Cubs are
really even asking after rentals of Bichette's caliber, that
might suggest Hoyer's plans differ from mine?

For me, that there "may have been" a light conversation---as BN
commented-- is not a confirmation of anything but is really
speculation. Those are weasel words--"may have been." It's the
kind of thing one says when you are speculating.
Apparently, this goes back to Morosi from a year ago, when Cubs
were in SS market and "may have been" interested in Bichette as
a SS. Even back then, Morosi couched his comments as I
"wonder" if Cubs interested. Pure speculation. Ditto for his
most recent comment. No actual reporting.
Again, for the fourth time, discuss, discuss. I don't care. I
just want to emphasize how far fetched and speculative all of
this is. But, enjoy your guilty pleasures.
