At the convention he can whine about coming in second on Ohtani,
Yamamoto, Bellinger, and how Bote and Smiley was too much for
       Soto or Alphonso.

So is there a cynicism or dump on Hoyer contest of which I am
       unaware?

I wish he would just pick the Dodgers and be done with it. They
were always his pick all along and all this noise is just to
sweeten his eventual deal with them. This is probably why Jed
jumped in with such gusto. No real danger of having to actually
       write that check.
       [/quote]
If there’s a “danger” that Cubs might have to pay Ohtani,
perhaps best way to avoid that danger is not to be making an
       offer that he could accept.
Yeah, Ohtani probably goes to Dodgers but, if you want the
player, you take your good faith shot at it. That’s what is
happening. Now it’s up to Ohtani.

If Ohtani really drags this out till almost Christmas like
Nightengale says, I don’t see how you can wait around knowing
he’s likely going to the Dodgers. Other names are going to
start coming off the board fast and furious.

What Nightengale said is that Ohtani signing is not imminent and
could be an unknown time between the winter meetings and before
Christmas holidays at the latest. Not necessarily “til almost
Christmas”— could be well before that, just not imminently.
Nightengale: “Give it a week, certainly before the Christmas
       holidays, but not quite yet.”

Chatter around this place is things with the Cubs are slow.
Carter is here, Jed is out somewhere perhaps cooking as the kids
say but hey I realized Ken Rosenthal is shorter than I expected
and they finally gave me a credential so who says I’m not a
       journalist
       Maybe Jed is in LA.

Seems like the Ohtani thing has really frozen the top end of the
       market.

Yeah, how could it not be? Kind of a bummer. Ohtani teams
can't sign other big tickets until he says no. And other
big-tickets can't sign until Ohtani losers have a chance to bid
       them up.
Is is actually slower than usual? I can't remember. Last year,
Correa didn't sign with Mets till 12/21, Swanson 12/21. Turner
was first, but only like Thursday midnight of winter meetings,
right? I recall early in winter-meetings week "source" saying
he'd not be surprised if the Cubs might even sign two of the
SS's, and stuff like that. Have the Cubs signed anybody
significant at winter meetings since Heyward and Zobrist? Seems
like they always just come out with no real moves, just saying
"we had lots of productive conversations".
