The problem with giving too much weight to "hard hit balls" is
that makes the assumption the player is trying to hit the ball
hard. Players who are simply trying to go the other way or just
put the ball in play are penalized.

Bellinger displayed amazing ability to put the ball in play with
2 strikes, and this was clearly not done with the idea of
maximizing hard hit rate. Bellinger also grades out high in
categories that are not easily measured including defensive
versatility and smarts/aggressiveness on the bases. I agree
with Brett, though, that while adding Bellinger is an attractive
option it would come with considerable long term risk and would
require an additional major offensive acquisition.

I mentioned this a while back. He shortened up and went oppo
quite a lot with 2 strikes…content to flare or place one the
other way. Many sources have acknowledged this, and confirmed
it, but still mention exit velocity as a factor. It doesn’t make
       much sense.

If someone wants to present stats showing exit velocities on
balls pulled, or attempted to drive with power, or even with 0-1
strikes as opposed to 2, I could be convinced of the merits of
       his exit velo concerns.
Until then, it’s all crap to me.

The concerns about Bellinger make perfect sense, even if you
personally disagree with them. Basically, if what's he's doing
is repeatable it makes him a unicorn. Baseball does have
unicorns but by definition they're extremely rare. Boras wants
you to bet $200 million that Bellinger is one of them.

How do you really feel, Dave?
To me it's a ploy to explain to fans why we didn't pursue or try
too hard to sign. That's another immeasurable: easy to root for
popularity. Puts fans in the seats.

Deeg, the real concern is that he tried to be a unicorn in order
to build his numbers back up. If he signs a big contract, maybe
they fear he reverts to flailing.

An interesting take. I don’t worry about that so much
(Bellinger seems smart enough to try and stick with what he
knows works) but I suppose a club might think that way.
In any event the Cubs seem pretty checked out on him, at least
       unless his stock really plummets.

Just curious, what is that comment based on? Anything specific?

There have been a lot of comments from insiders suggesting we’re
       unlikely to bring him back.
