Heh heh, the great Jim Bowden has a fun piece in which he
assigns one FA to each team.

With Cubs losing out on Ohtani to Dodgers, Yamamoto Mets,
Bellinger Yankees, Bowden matches the Cubs with Rhys Hoskins on
a $12/1 deal. The only team with a smaller ticket is the Royals
with $8/1 on Hyun Jin Ryu. :):). Bowden is funny.

Craig, Jim Bowden is a genius. You must bow to him. Your
disrespect will not be tolerated.

I am amazed at the number of writers and "experts" are
suggesting that the Cubs are the leading contenders for Ohtani.
I'm a doubter, but where's the smoke...
And let's not forget William's kindergarten teacher!

TBH I haven’t seen a single source indicate anybody other than
the Dodgers is the leading contender.

Multiple reports the Cubs are deeply involved in Glasnow talks
(as you’d expect). What would be an acceptable price? Ace
stuff, horrible injury history, rental, not cheap ($25 million).
You’d think the Rays would target guys who could help them next
season, since they’re always in contention. Assad or Weseski
and a 10-20 system prospect? I’m not giving up Morel or Wicks
for a season of Glasnow (which is actually whatever portion of
the season he’s actually able to pitch).
That's odd since most of them cite you and some
Washington DC kindergarten teacher as their sources.

We have to give Bellinger another mil for being Comeback Player
of the Year, so I'm sure that puts us out of any FA hunt.

See how close Wesneski gets you and consider from there.

Trades have limitless tinkerability, unlike FA. I could imagine
scenario where a team trading with the cubs wants a Cubs
prospect, but we think that's too rich and makes the deal
imbalanced. Easy ways to move towards balance.
Suppose hypothetically Hoyer wants Glasnow, and Tampa likes
Wesneski and Triantos in return, but Hoyer thinks that's too
much value.
Bote's $5.5 contract would be an easy "tinker" toy to reduce the
value of Cubs deal and perhaps level the values.
Smyly might have similar "tinker" utility?
Obviously Tampa could some other prospect of variable value back
to level the imbalance?
Or Tampa could simply eat some of Glasnow's salary to improve
the value.
Not saying those are appropriate values or whatever; just the
obvious observation that you can tinker with trades, in ways
that can't be done with FA signings.

Soto to the Yankees is heating up and teams are dropping out of
Ohtani sweepstakes.
Word is that if Yankees get Soto, they won't pursue
Bellinger any longer either.
