Hoyer remarks on Ross made in March 2022 in connection with
Ross’ contract extension:
"David has done a fantastic job as a manager," Hoyer told
reporters. "He's learned a ton on the job. Even while learning I
think he's excelled. He's kept morale good. He's run the staff
very well. I love having him as a partner. Our hope certainly is
that David's here for a long time."

When Breslow was first hired, wasn’t it as “Special Assistant”
to the GM, or something along those lines? Kinda like Dwight
Schrute being “Assistant to the Regional Manager” rather than
“Assistant Regional Manager”?
I wonder if Rossy will be offered a similar position? Something
equivalent, minus the “Director of Pitching” title that Breslow
also had…

Not sure why Ross would take a lesser job in the organization
when he’s being paid for 2024 in any case.
More likely that he wants to stay in managing and will seek
another managerial job.

Seemingly a great move to hire Craig Counsell. His results for
MIlwaukee have been amazing!
Best guess is that Cub players will respond very well to him,
too.

Not by me. I think he is doing the job the way Epstein should
have done it, as far as the long term is concerned.

I guess I was unaware that a high profile front office position
was a lesser position than on-field manager…

a repudiation of their policies up til now. Although the salary
is amazingly high for a manager, it is quite low compared to the
cost of free agent players. What kind of pitcher can they get
for 10 million per year? Another Smiley? Another Miley? And
the contract is only 4 years in length, in keeping with their
avoidance of long term contracts.

to sign or trade for a top pitcher, perhaps a mid level pitcher
to replace Stroman, and a mid level position player. I don't
think this changes that outlook, since the luxury tax and roster
needs are unchanged. I will be extremely surprised if the Cubs
go over the luxury tax this year, especially for the acquisition
of a long term monster contract.

So you think the Cubs are bringing in Counsell to manage a team
that is going to replace Stroman and Bellinger with lesser
players? That would be disappointing and would free up another
summer for me.

It is always nice to have a free summer.
I have already said that I expect them to sign another mid-level
pitcher to replace Stroman, who was in my opinion, but not a top
tier starter.
I hope they manage to get Yamamoto as their top tier pitcher,
and if they do so, I do not expect them to also add a
Bellinger-level replacement, at least not if a mega-year
contract is required. In my opinion, they believe there is a
reasonable expectation that production from PCA, Canario,
perhaps even Mervis, and a properly used Morel will add
sufficient offense to replace Bellinger.
And I believe that if they can do no more without exceeding the
luxury tax this season, they will not exceed the luxury tax this
season.

I sure hope they don't believe that. I would be shocked if they
do.
