Is it possible that some people may underappreciate Kyle
Hendricks?

With Stroman opting out, I'm glad they're bringing Hendricks
back.
Does NOT having already arranged an extension by now mean that
an extension won't happen this offseason? Last month, Hoyer
sounded interested in extending Hendricks. Obviously that
didn't happen... yet. Did Hoyer work hard on that, and decide
Hendrick's agent wanted too much and it's not going to happen?
Or after the season did Hoyer have a million other things to do,
so working on the extension is for later on?
I'm pretty fine either way. If they extended for an extra year
or two, and the price seemed fair, I'd be fine with that. There
is advantage in knowing some bones of the team skeleton, and
costs, when planning ahead. At the same time, when players are
34 years old, going year-by-year is fine, too. What he can do
at age 35 and 36 may not be as good as what he did this year at
age 33, or what he did back in 2014-2016.
Career accomplishments may not predict future. So I'm not sure
it's fair to mock posters hesitant to commit long-term to
Hendricks future?

Know that youre joking but Hendricks has more Ks per 9 innings
than Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton.
More recently, better than John Lackey, Matt Garza, Brandon
Webb, Andy Benes.

Expectations of strikeouts/nine innings has soared since the
days of Gibson and Carlton, so the comparison isn't very
helpful. And my comment was, as I suspect Curt's was, ironic.
I have always been a fan of Hendricks, and still am. I hope
they extend him for two or three more years.

Rotation core: Steele-Hendricks-Taillon. Three givens.
Seems obvious Hoyer would want to pursue one strong rotation guy
in free agency.
*Yamamoto, Snell, Nola, Gray, Montgomery, Eduardo Rodriguez,
Shōta Imanaga, Stroman.
*Anybody outside of those 8 guys that I should be thinking
about?
I wonder where Hoyer will shop in that field. Stroman, because
he's familiar and won't cost a draft pick? Imanaga, not
prohibitively expensive and won't cost a pick? Maybe Sonny
Gray, because when he's good he's really good? But being the
oldest, maybe he won't command the same length of commitment?
Hoyer often seems most afraid of contract length, so maybe Gray
will appeal to him? I wonder if lefty/righty makes any
different to Hoyer? Several of those guys are lefties. Would
Snell and Yamamoto exceed Hoyer's price-and-length willingness,
so he'd just rather shop more in the
Montgomery/Rodriguez/Imanaga/Stroman price range?
