"Hey, it’s Baseball. Be good at the right time. Mix in some good
fortune and good luck and a good clubhouse and play the game.
It’s unpredictable. If don’t appreciate that, you still have
       stuff to learn about baseball."
We all have more to learn about baseball, but the above is well
       said, Reb.

When the Cubs lost 5 out of 6 to the D'Backs in September, it
seemed like an epic failure against an inferior team. In
retrospect, it was bad timing to have 6 games against a hot team
at that critical moment in the season. One thing to take away
from this is that the schedulers should try to better space out
the opposition for each team. Bundling all of one's games
against a particular opponent in a narrow window in September
can create a situation that is not entirely fair.

Losing Breslow to the Red Sox really stings. Seemingly the
brightest mind in our front office group.

Yeah, agree. It's hard for the Cubs to keep up with the brains
that other organizations have. Undesirable to lose a bright
       one.

There are days I wonder if that isn't a low bar.

I don’t think anyone has ever said that there isn’t randomness
is baseball. Trying to be the team that gets hot at the right
time as your only hope isn’t a course Cubs fans should want.
There are types of teams that have a better chance of being the
right team at the right time. Build a better team and the
randomness is more likely to happen. Having a 23 year old with
.285/.362/.506 slash line with 25 HR and 54 SB is pretty great
too. If the Cubs had that I’d feel a lot better about there
       future.

I would feel even better if they had 2 or 3 of those.
Or better stil, 9 or 10 of them.

The club with the best chance—after the season— to win the WS
(Braves) had a 18.4% chance (Pecota). So, almost 82% likelihood
of defeat——and higher for everybody else.
So, every club needs some luck/good fortune. It’s the nature if
       baseball.
Not a matter of luck being ‘your only hope” (whatever that
means). First, you have to be good enough to get into the
post-season and then you have to play well, have some guys step
up, be resilient, and have some luck too. There is no “only
hope.” It’s a bunch of things coming together.
Lots of different ways to win. Some clubs with big power get
cold offensively. School of thought that power-oriented offense
more likely to get cold against top grade pitching than a more
diversified offense. Phillies seemed like everybody was trying
to hit homers in games 6 and 7. DBacks manufactured some runs.
Eight SBs in those two games put a lot of pressure on Phils. The
running game is back in baseball. Cubs experienced similar thing
from DBacks in Sept when lost 6 of 7.
Yeah, build a better Cubs team. I’m in favor.

I remember this destroying us to start the 1997 season: the
season began with 10 games in a row against the
eventual-WS-winning Marlins and 100-win Braves, and I remember
ESPN pundits saying "just don't go 0 and 10"... we did. I don't
think that team was going to win anything (like they did the
next year), but clumping games against specific teams like that
       creates these kinds of situations.

Kantrovitz might be headed to the Mets.
