Brian Shaw, 18 games in 32 days, that's amazing! Wow.
Peguara, 30 over 2 months and 3 days, that's very awesome, too.
Again, thanks much for the discussion and research on this,
don't think I've ever had occasion before to wrap my brain
around exactly how many appearances is max per month before.
The data being what it is: I hope the Cubs become a team that
has so many good relievers that we've got guys we'd be happy to
use 14-15 times in a month; but like the Dodgers and Tampa we
don't need to do that very often; and that however they are
used, that guys stay sharp and healthy and good.
*I often feel like the Cubs need to get ahead off the starter,
because if the opponent's use-when-winning relievers come in,
that our chance is very slim. I'd like to have the Cubs bullpen
be really good and deep so that other teams feel that way when
facing us. And I'd also like our pen to be so deep so that our
use-when-losing relievers are also usually very good, enough to
often freeze opponent scoring and give the offense a chance to
come from behind.

I wonder if the next pitching-infrastructure boss will have any
tricks for increasing control? I hope he stays, but becoming
head of baseball operations seems like a significant promotion,
career-wise.

Of course they are.
Stroman doesn't have a NTC, does he? Might be worth thinking
about.

Not sure how fits within payroll but the usual Tyler
Glasnow-to-Cubs rumors reappeared couple weeks ago because of
his $25M salary for 2024 that Rays don’t figure to afford.
That would have makings of a pretty good Cubs rotation:
Glasnow-Steele-Stroman-Taillon-Hendricks.

Continuing to update the Red Sox search for a new head of
baseball operations: Confirmed that Breslow has advanced in the
process. Unknown if anyone else has. Multiple industry sources
consider Breslow the favorite to get the job.

I think that is kinda misleading and unfair. The 2015-2019 Cubs
teams didn't have a DH. If you removed the pitchers from the
team wRC+ calculation the Cubs from 2016-2019 where better and
the 2015 would have tied 2023. Give those teams a full time DH
and those teams would have scored a heck of a lot more runs.

2023 Cubs didn’t take sufficient advantage of DH spot.
Batted .203 at DH and OPSed at .695. Only catcher spot (thanks
to Barnhart) had a lower OPS than DH. That is unacceptable for a
bat-only position.
Of course that’s still a lot better than having the pitcher hit
(even with lots of pinch-hitting for the P) in prior years.
Really helps a lot to have offense from bottom 1/3 of lineup.
See that now with Rangers getting to WS and their outstanding
offense this season. Helps to achieve that with pretty good
offense from catching, as they have. Rangers slugged .452 in
2023 with only one truly elite bat but lots of other guys who
slugged near .500—-kind of Suzuki guys and Happ in a better
power season than 2023.
After trade deadline, when Candelario was hitting for a couple
of weeks, had him hitting at #7 spot for a time. That was a
boost for as long as it lasted. Really helps to throw a deep
lineup at opposing pitchers, like Rangers do.
