Round 4 Will Sanders RHP U of South Carolina
BA:
A projection righthander out of high school, Sanders ranked as
the No. 200 prospect on the 2020 BA 500 thanks to a lanky,
6-foot-5 frame and an upper-80s fastball that scouts expected to
be much firmer in just a few years. The projection proved
accurate, as Sanders packed on strength to a frame now listed at
6-foot-6, 230 pounds and averaged 93 mph and has touched 98 mph
with his fastball at peak velocity. Sanders has logged 50-plus
innings each year at South Carolina, and in his 2023 draft year
posted a 5.37 ERA over 11 starts and 60.1 innings, with a 27.9%
strikeout rate and 9.4% walk rate. He works from a deliberate
windup with a more compact arm action than you might expect
given his long levers, and throws from a three-quarter slot with
downhill angle thanks to a high release point. While he has
solid velocity on his fastball, and above-average induced
vertical break, the pitch has always played down a bit and been
hit hard. This spring hitters managed a 1.109 OPS against the
fastball, though he has generated solid whiff rates with a
curveball, slider and changeup. He throws his curveball in the
low 80s with good depth and 12-to-6 movement, the slider is in
the mid 80s with solid tilt and his changeup has long been a
solid pitch for him in the mid 80s. Sanders has allowed a high
rate of home runs in his career, and could experiment more with
a cutter or two-seam fastball at the next level to keep hitters
off the barrel more consistently.

Carico had some injury issues this year, but in 2022 he had some
good EV. He's healthy and hitting well in the Cape.
Rosario hits the ball really hard. He's 6-6 and built like a
tank.
Melendez has some projectability.

6th rounder Rosario didn't make mlb/Callis's top-250. They have
him listed at 6'6" on the mlb draft tracker, but other listings
seem to show him as 6'2", (BA, Perfect Game). Not sure which is
the typo, but I think I'd prefer 6'2" over 6'6".

fan…he mentioned the Fall Classic showing as well, and said he
looked amazing…a totally different pitcher…

Cubs draft a 5'10" Minnesota guy in round 8. Bateman has a
junior-year iso of 0.052, after posting 0.051 iso as a
sophomore.

Carico hit .125 at the Cape in a brief stint, with two homers.
So, showed some power.

On a Fangraphs draft chat (I think that was the site, anyway),
someone threw out an Ian Kinsler comp on Shaw.

17% walk rare, 27% K% in 29 AB with 2 HR. He probably had some
bad BABIP luck and was an 0-4 away from an .820 OPS. I’ll take
that a lefty hitting catcher from a small school.

So far I’d give this a B/B+. In my totally uninformed grading.
It is fairly college heavy, but the guys they drafted have some
upside. Wiggins and Sanders are tall lanky guys and the type
that the Dodgers turn into something.
It will be interesting to see what Shaw’s power plays as. If
he’s 15-20 HR that is pretty good player. If he can be more
than that he’s pretty special.
The senior SS is supposed to be pretty good defensively and he
made a lot more contact this year. If he can keep that up he
might be a decent backup or trade chip.
I wish they took more high schoolers, because the seem to do
well drafting them in later rounds, but the money/liking them
may not have lined up..

By my count, there were only 14 HS players combined taken after
the 4th round in the draft by all clubs, that is, from rounds
5-10. Cubs took two of these 14.
So, if you wanted a HS guy, it was early and most of these
probably will overslot.
I wonder if this has something to do with elimination of a
short-season league for every organization. Now, guys who might
be playing there get backed up at the Complex and players have
to be fairly advanced to get needed attention. Interesting that
the two HS guys Cubs drafted are Spanish-speaking (one is
Dominican and other from PR) and possibly could be sent to
Dominican League to play, I suppose.
