More about Shaw from Cub website"
"The 21-year-old, who received just two Division I offers out of
high school, has rocketed up draft boards over the past two
seasons, with his stock absolutely taking off after he was named
the Cape Cod League's MVP in 2022. He then returned to Maryland
for his junior season and put up monster numbers, hitting
.341/.445/.697 with 24 home runs and 69 RBIs on his way to being
named the Big Ten Player of the Year. Despite how impressive his
development has been, Shaw's love of the game may somehow
       outweigh his talent.
“When you're playing baseball, you deal with so much failure
anyways, so you better be able to tune out all the pressure that
the game brings,” Shaw told umterps.com. “There's just so much
failure you deal with as a hitter. And as an offensive player,
you just need to be able to go out there every day and have a
lot of fun and enjoy the moment and do the little things right.”
If nothing else, he is known for doing the little things. He
makes hard contact and has great plate discipline, with his
walks (43) outnumbering his strikeouts (42) in 2023. Although
he's grown into some power and has the ability to drive the ball
the opposite way, his best-rated tool is still his plus speed --
alongside his 24 home runs, he stole 18 bases in his junior
       season.
Shaw, who has been Maryland's starting shortstop for the past
two seasons, has also shown himself capable of playing second
and third, and likely lacks the arm strength to stick on the
left side of the infield. His potential to be a versatile,
bat-first infielder is somewhat reminiscent of another Maryland
product, Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe."

His record indicates that he has more than a "little" power more
       than Hoerner.

I mean, if Madrigal can - to his immense credit - learn to play
a decent 3B with his arm, I suppose it’s possible Shaw can too.
The scouting consensus on him is that he’t not an especially
natural or fluid defensive player and the left side of the
infield is probably not gonna happen, but let him try and see
how he does. If he hits like you hope, he’ll play somewhere.

My biggest issue with the Shaw pick is kinda becoming my issue
with Cubs picks. Under Kantrovitz they seem to be taking more
good players, than guys that become stars. It might not be fair
to put Horton in that group, but Shaw, Wicks, Howard all seem to
be guys that have ceilings of good not great players.

I think there’s some truth to that. Part of it I think is a
reluctance to draft overslot guys who fall to them. I like
Horton and Farris but I would have taken Lee. Teel sure looked
like the best player on the board this year. You can lay that
on Kantrovitz but Hoyer is the guy who said you can win without
stars and he wanted to follow the Rays’ model.

I believe you can win without superstars. But it requires that
you are not weak at any position. If the Cubs had above average
corner infielders and a couple of additional above average arms
in the pen, they would be contenders. IMHO.

I would say that Shaw has more than just a little more power
than Hoerner if this clip means anything.

Unless you have a top five pick, you aren't going to get a high
probability star player. Your best bet is to go after the "very
good" and bring in the superstars through IFA and free agency.
I don't understand the angst about Shaw. The scouting reports
indicate a good contact, good power, and the only knock on him
seems to be that he will not stay at shortstop. But let's be
realistic. If a good contact, good power college player is also
expected to be a good defensive shortstop, he isn't going to be
around at pick 13. At this point, for the Cubs to sacrifice
offense to pick a shortstop is silly, since with Swanson at
short long on a long term contract, and Hoerner able to move to
shortstop without great defensive sacrifice, the last thing the
Cubs need is a "good hitter for a shortstop" who will have to
move to another position that requires greater offensive
       ability.
I know nothing about Shaw other than the scouting reports, but
the scouting reports seem to be about what you could expect at
       pick 13.

And even if he doesn't fit into the Cubs' positional needs over
the next few years, if he can hit at the ML level he will be a
       valuable asset.

That isn’t a small list of things this team is missing.
