Jim Callis
@jimcallisMLB
4th-rder Will Sanders signs w/@Cubsfor $600k (pick 113 value =
$591,800). @GamecockBasebll RHP, potential 1st-rder before
up-and-down season, 92-94 mph fastball to 96, three worthwhile
secondary pitches in changeup, curveball & slider.

1. Everybody signed with dollars listed except Wiggins, Hope,
and senior Sam Armstrong
2. 18 and 19 took sub-slot deals, $50 and $80.
3. The other Day3 college guys are all $150 slot (12, 14, 15,
16, 17, 20)
4. By my math, Kanto has $551K discretionary overage. (That
included the 5% for Wiggins's pick #2).
5. So if Wiggins signs at slot, and they use the $550 for Hope,
then HOpe would get $700, which would be 3rd-round, top-100
slot.
6. Good shot Wiggins signs below slot, in which case Hope might
get even more. Kantro's scouts evidently like Hope a lot.

Interesting that they liked him to full slot, plus a little.
The "potential 1st-rounder" stuff is interesting, I hadn't
really appreciated that vibe when he got selected. Apparently
he had a terrible fastball this season. I wonder if they think
they can maybe get a little more velocity still, or mess with
grip so that the motion isn't so whackable? Or maybe improve
the consistency on the bottom end. Maybe 92-94 up to 96 is on
good ones? But for every 96, there are four 89-91's, leading to
Smyly/Taillon-esque HR allowance? Would be cool for the PD to
have a big success story.

The problem with that is Sammy never struck out at the level in
the minors or anywhere else at the level of a guy like Bowser.
Plus one of the methods Sammy used to mitigate the strikeout
problem is banned by MLB and regularly tested for now.

They took Wiggins pretty close to where he was listed in
pre-draft rankings.

Hope signing for only $400. Same as Carico and Melendez,
5th-round dollars.
I'd been expecting higher. Hope Swope scouted him wisely, and
he somehow learns to hit.
I'm surprised, because this leaves Kantro with $300 overslot on
the table, with only Wiggins left to sign. I'm doubting Kantro
is just leaving money on the table, he hasn't before. So I
assume this means the Wiggins deal is going to be a significant
superslot? I'd not have anticipated that on Day1 when Cubs
picked Wiggins at 68, when only BA had ranked him top 100, and
most media scouts had him more in the 100-135 4th-round range.
I thought he'd likely be an underslot guy. Super-wild college
wildman, surgery, most media reports listed the fastball as
straight, who'd have guessed he was going to get superslot?
Hope Kantro is vindicated.

I’ll just throw this out there. Pure speculation on my part.
Could the $300,000 be used to sign an undrafted player, for a
$450,000 bonus?
Yes, in terms of the pool money but as a practical matter?
BA’s final mock draft had a “throwing darts” section speculating
on who clubs might take after first round. For Cubs, one player
mentioned was Duce Robinson, a big-time USC football recruit
(the top tight end HS recruit in the nation). Robinson is
definitely going to play football at USC and was clear about
that before MLB draft. But, wants to play baseball too.
Robinson went undrafted in MLB draft.
Pre-draft BA ranked him #146 on their board saying. “brings rare
athleticism and upside to diamond.”
He’s 6’6, 220.
So, now, most likely scenario is that Robinson plays baseball at
USC, along with football, and that’s that.
But, who knows, maybe that pre-draft BA tidbit was based on some
Cubs interest and, now, Cubs willing to pay up to $450,000 for
Duce Robinson to do a Wilson Cunningham thing and show up for a
couple months in the summer and play pro baseball? An upside
investment for a guy ranked at #146?
Oh, and MLB slot for #146?
$429,400.
Just a thought.
