Carico intrigues me. If the Cubs had a much higher view of him
than most of us, it might explain why they passed up the better
thought-of catcher in the first round in order to take Shaw. It
may be that the Cubs feel that they still got a catcher nearly
as good, along with a badly needed offensive infielder.

Looks like Shaw at #13 got larger bonus than #12 Tommy Troy.
Callis reports that Troy signed for $4.4. Shaw signed for
$4,848,500.

Kantro now has almost $550 in discretionary above-slot, assuming
2+4 sign. (Before Wiggins presumably signs sub-slot and frees
up even more.)

Interesting. Most 1st rounders take sub-slot deals. Perhaps
even with 1st rounder like Shaw, there is still advance
negotiation? We'll give you our full slot, and look what ideas
our PD guys have. If DBacks call you, know that you can get our
full slot; tell them no unless they really beat our slot offer.

If the Cubs can correct his contact issues, that could be a
steal in the draft.

Are there any great examples anywhere of anyone correcting
really bad contact issues? I'm maybe not as on top of things as
I once was, but I'm not sure anyone comes to mind right off the
bat.
Either that or correcting the contact issues of someone like
Bowser means you're hoping he reaches a ceiling of someone like
Patrick Wisdom someday.

Turning Boswer into Tony Gwynn? No. Improving it though yes.
Rizzo went from a low 20% guy in the minors to sub 20% in the
majors. Javy and Bryant both improved their K%. I believe the
Dodgers have done it as well with better results.
It depends what whis issue is. I think the Athletic mentioned
that his hand placement might be improved and that might help
decrease the strikeouts. No if he is a guy like Javy that
chases out of the zone and doesn't have an amazing ability to
make contact on those pitches you can't. If you can take him
from somebody that projects at above 30% to around 25-27% that
can be a good player. There are some team that have been
working with improving pitch recognition, but it isn't as proven
as doing things like the pitch lab.

Trice (12th round K-guy from ODU then NCState) and Ethan
Flanagan (17th), the soft-toss lefty sophomore from UCLA, both
signed.
Flanagan wasn't a velocity guy. But as a freshman he got 7
starts and 60 innings with good stats at powerful UCLA. This
year as a sophomore, he started 6 of his 9 appearances, but his
ERA jumped from 3.28 to 5.12, and he only pitched 30 innings.
His signing picture shows injury bandaging around his left
elbow. I'd wondered if a UCLA starter sophomore who'd been good
as a freshman might be hard to sign, and might go back or else
require some overslot. But if he's injured, I'd think getting
signed and getting full rehab support from a pro club would be a
great deal for a guy. Maybe surgery, rehab, a couple of normal
years of maturation, and he'll come back next year with his
freshman pitchability but also with big-league velocity added
on? Probably not getting a bunch of Kantro's discretionary
overslot dollars, though.
