Full 30 minutes touched on a lot of the guys. (No reference to
Hope.)
Some notes:
1. Shaw, referenced he's versatile, his arm works from "a few
different spots in the infield", plural, and referenced 2nd or
3rd. So I took some encouragement that Kantro perceived Shaw at
3B as realistic. *IF* he hits, he doesn't need to be limited to
trade bait or being stuck behind Hoerner.
2. Talked at some length about Jaxon Wiggins. Was pretty
effusive about what a "premier talent", "premier talent",
"top-of-the-rotation arm", "deluxe physical specimen", "deluxe
athlete", "explosive". "Sky is the limit". Referenced his
progress, from HS to freshman (just pouring gas) then sophomore,
and the perception that his slider, change, and fastball control
were all progressing, and then the more vertical curveball
starting to get implemented at the end of the season.
"Improving rapidly". Still putting on weight naturally. "He's
a special person", "pretty special human being".
3,4. Didn't discuss Rivera or Sanders.
5. Carico, said he's really agile, flexible. "We're really
optimistic that he can stick there" (at catcher). Really
advanced awareness of the strike zone. Defensively, he's a
really good athlete, really agile, really flexible, think he's
got enough arm strength to maintain the position for now, and
hopefully everything develops as his body develops. But there's
no reason to think he's not going to be able to maintain the
position at this point. A couple of allusions to "for now" and
"at this point". I think allowance that he might perhaps
outgrow the position; but perhaps also thought that he might be
able to improve his arm strength further?
6. Rosario: [Spoke favorably about the 2nd-year scout in South
Carolina, and what a good job she did with Sanders and Fonzie.]
For Rosario, said he can run and throw, but that the power is
the carrying tool. Had tryout at Myrtle, showed big power
hitting it off CF scoreboard. Will need to work on his
approach, and his bat-to-ball skills.
7. Melendez: Said he's got unusual bat-to-ball skills for a
young PR prospect. Has a Rice commitment, wasn't an unknown,
kind of a famous guy over the last couple of years. Internal
reports had him at least 2 or 3 rounds higher. Think he has a
chance to stay at SS. Still growing into his frame. Some
different bat-to-ball skills. Think once he starts to mature
physically, he might be able to really hit as the years unfold.
16. Daniel Brown: Can spin the ball, athletic, really smart
kid, hungry to learn and improve, thirst to add knowledge.
Going to take some time and patience, no certainty, but how
impressive of a person he is and willingness to improve,
combined with our pitching development department, has a chance
to become a pretty exciting guy in a few years.
Kantro gives a good interview. Seems pretty calm, answers
questions as asked and expands on them, isn't pinching. Seems
thoughtful and practical. Obviously he's positive about the
guys they take, otherwise why take them? But doesn't come
across quite as unbelievable as Fleita-gush from days past.

Other interesting note from Kantro was comment that sometimes
even on the day of draft, perhaps even as late as an hour before
their pick, they might still be zoom-conferencing a guy, have
the hitting or pitching coordinator trying to sell ideas on how
the Cubs can help the player improve.

Well, according to the draft tracker (which is not official, but
usually prettu reliable), the Cubs have signed all their
seemingly important draftees other than the first, third and
fourth, which almost always sign.
They only drafted three high schoolers, but have signed them
all. And surprisingly, one of their choices has already been
ranked by BA in the top 100 national prospects. Personally, I
don't put much stock in the latter, but at least someone thinks
highly of Shaw.

He also mentioned they try and use player development plans to
get a lower signing bonus during those calls.
Kiley McDaniel mentioned on the draft that only about 4 teams
bring their player development people into the draft. It would
appear that the Cubs are one of the 4.

It seems that the Cubs try to reach a salary agreement for as
many prospects as possible, or at least a salary range that is
agreeable to both sides before the selection takes place.
Perhaps as follows:
"We can pick you in this round if you are willing to sign for
XXX."
If they meet reluctance, it makes sense to try to throw in as
much as possible to make the "sale".
You have a better chance at making the majors if you sign with
us. Our development people are the best. You have a better
chance at recovering from your injury if you sign with us. Our
medical staff are the best. Or even, you have a better chance
to make the majors soon if you sign with us, because our guys
stink so badly that there is room for you at the top.
Whatever gets the deal done. Probably with similar negotiations
going on with other prospects at the same time, with the
decision of which one is the best combination of talent and cost
coming at the last minute.

Kantrovitz said they present a pretty detailed plan as to how
the Cubs are going to make them better and the dollar amount is
established before making the pick. They way he presented is x
team will give this much, but we will do this and offer a lower
amount.

I don't think Kantro was in charge of the Cubs draft back in
2019 but I know something similar happened with the Cubs 3rd
round pick. The Cubs called Matt Cronin and talked to him about
being their 3rd Round selection. They offered him roughly 33%
of the Slot for that pick. Cronin didn't accept the offer. The
Cubs took Michael McAvene and signed him for under slot, but for
more than they offered Cronin.
I was pretty disappointed at the time as I liked Cronin more as
a prospect than I did McAvene. Cronin is struggling this year,
but he has been the better minor league pitcher thus far (for
whatever that is worth). Both have had some injury issues and
neither seems to be a MLB prospect any longer. Of course with
Pitchers that can change quickly.
