I expect the Cubs did their research on Hope, and knew what it
would take, and wasted no time. Last year, Kantro would take an
extra HS-overslot in case his primary overslot candidate
wouldn't sign. Didn't this year. Maybe the Flanagan pick
serves that function this year, but kinda expect that Hope is
kind of a lock to get signed.
Sounds like a toolsy dancer; hitting is always the hardest
thing.

BA blurb about Bowser is a classic love the guy/hate the guy
summary. So, yes, intriguing:
Bowser stole the show at the Perfect Game All-American Classic
at Petco Park in 2019 when he won the pregame home run derby and
the game’s Most Valuable Player award. Teams considered him a
top-two rounds talent out of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City,
Calif.) High, but the shortened 2020 draft and his strong
commitment to Stanford led him to go unpicked. Bowser started
all three years for the Cardinal and hit 39 home runs, but his
strikeouts increased each successive season. Bowser is a strong,
physical 6-foot-4, 226-pound righthanded hitter with plus-plus
raw power. He destroys balls to all fields with his natural
strength and plus bat speed and posts top-end exit velocities.
Bowser makes impact on contact, but he has a long, grooved swing
and swings and misses alarmingly often. He struggles to cover
the outer half of the plate and frequently chases out of the
strike zone. He is a well below-average hitter whose pitch
recognition and plate discipline are poor and whose swing needs
to be rebuilt. Bowser is a versatile defender who spent time at
both second and third base at Stanford. He alternately looks
better at one position over the other, although he tends to be
more reliable at second base. He is a below-average runner with
above-average arm strength but poor accuracy

Has-power-but-can't-hit is kinda useless. Bowser and Trice,
those mega-K guys are going to fail. And when guys have been
consistent K-kings for three years against college pitchers,
it's kinda inconceivable to think they're going to fix that
against better pro pitching, which will get continuously better
with each step up the chain.
Hope seems like a really appealing prospect.... Assuming he
can't hit, as seems probable, he'll fail too. But if he can,
he's got a chance. Unlike college guys who have established for
three years that they can't, at least it's an unread story for
him.

The vast majority of guys drafted by every team, fail. But when
drafting in the last 5 rounds or so, it is probably better to
choose someone with a high ceiling for hitting and a dozen
weakness that must be rectified, than someone with a lower
ceiling and a lot fewer weaknesses. Kind of like a weak hitting
pitcher swinging for the fences. Probably won't make it, but
what is there to loose.
McGeary might be a good example. Good power and reasonable
contact, but all against low level pitching. And no defensive
position to play with any certainty. Almost certainly will
fail, but that tiny long shot might make the pick worthwhile.
In the meantime, I rather like the draft, considering that they
were picking 13 with no second round pick until the compensation
round. The first three picks have enough of a record and
scouting reports to dream on, and over the last few years, the
Cubs have been gradually improving their record on non-first
round picks, so there is always the possibility of a surprise or
two.

Cubs area scout in mid-Atlantic region is Billy Swoope, who
amazingly has scouted the region for Cubs for over 30 years!
Very rare in baseball circles these days to scout a region that
long for one organization. I met him many years ago at little
league event nearby. A true baseball lifer and a character.
So, by my count, Cubs drafted seven of Billy Swoope’s area guys
this draft: Matt Shaw (1) and Nick Dean (19) from Maryland;
Carico (5) from Davidson; Hope (11) the HS kid; Trice (12) NC
State; Armstrong (13) Old Dominion; Wildman Daniel Brown (16)
from Campbell.
Quite a haul.

The "experts" after Day 1, were predicting the Davidson catcher
to go early in the second round. We got him in the 4th.

Swoope was the one that Arguello used to refer to as the super
scout.
