Cubs Draft 2023
By: Reb Date: June 20, 2023, 2:57 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Putting this here in the old 2022 draft topic pending a new 2023
draft thread.
So, maybe Cubs try to get 3B of the future in 1st round this
year’s draft?
Keith Law has new mock up today and seems to say Cubs focus is
on infielders who can hit. Seems like all four are SSs that
likely are going to move elsewhere in the infield
13. Chicago Cubs – Colin Houck, SS, Parkview High (Lilburn, Ga.)
Houck and Aidan Miller apparently had great workouts for the
Cubs recently, adding their names to a mix that also includes
that same college hitter group, notably Shaw and [Tommy] Troy
(Stanford)…….Shaw is one of the best hitters in the college
class, with hard contact and power, but needs to play somewhere
other than shortstop. He’s one of many college bats I’ve heard
[also linked to Boston].. all of whom are good batted-ball data
guys as well as hitters scouts believe will continue to hit in
pro ball.

My completely uninformed opinion is Matt Shaw sounds really
interesting and Chase Dollander if he falls.

Yeah, could see Cubs taking a high-upside SP who surprisingly
falls to #13 but otherwise maybe a Brooks Lee type bat who Cubs
passed on last year.
Seems like several interesting IF bats could be there at #13. A
college guy like Shaw could move fast in player development,
particularly as he was league MVP at the Cape last summer.

Eric Longenhagen (Fangraphs) released Mock today with following
comments around Cubs/nearby teams in order:
“12. Arizona Diamondbacks
Pick: Aidan Miller, 3B, Mitchell HS (FL)
13. Chicago Cubs
Pick: Nolan Schanuel, 1B, Florida Atlantic
14. Boston Red Sox
Pick: Blake Mitchell, C, Sinton HS (TX)
Miller’s name pops up at all three of these picks, and if the
Cubs and Red Sox want him but have their pockets picked by the
D-backs, they might each check down to a college safety valve.
Maryland’s Matt Shaw is often mentioned in this general area,
but Schanuel has been mentioned specifically with the Cubs (and
as high as the Angels).”
So, Longenhagen has Cubs taking a lefty bat 1B/OF from a
lower-tier college program. One interesting thing about Schanuel
is that he has more HBP (18) than Ks (14)! Don’t see that too
often over a 59 game season. Has a ridiculous OPS (1.483) but
that’s at a less challenging conference than the other top
college guys. Still, 71 walks and 14 Ks is pretty good at most
any level. Might be a guy who moves fast to the majors. If he’s
the pick, maybe Cubs not that enthusiastic about Mervis future.
Of course, any mock pick is guesswork. But, think just maybe
Cubs pop a corner IFer——either 3B (several candidates) or
Schanuel at 1B. Or, maybe there’s a pitcher they really like.

I’ve seen Arjun Nimmala mentioned on more than one mock for the
Cubs…which would be interesting…

Longenhagen:
"Indications are that Nimmala, who struck out a ton this spring,
is falling."
So, Longenhagen now has him going at #20.
Perhaps he's wrong or things will change by Sunday. With other
options out there, not sure whether Cubs would go with high
ceiling, low floor HS shortstop. But, maybe.

The Cubs being interesting in an athletic SS who can't make
contact, that seems like a Cubs-type thing?

Mayo at Pipeline has a Mock out this evening…….with Nimmala
going to Cubs. But, he notes: “If Nimmala doesn’t go here, it
might become a little tougher to find him a home in this range.”
Lots of guesswork, of course.
I know nothing about who might be the best selection, but
thinking may feel better about a “Jordan Walker type” over a “Ed
Howard type.”

Law has the Cubs taking Shaw. Nimmaka falling to the Cards. He
mentioned Adian Miller had a great work out with the Cubs
falling to the Mariners.
The 1B doesn’t have much power and that makes him a lot less
interesting.
