I've had position eligibility granted before guys were not
eligible and have been announced at another spot. Starters
moving to the bullpen have been given this as well. Betts is
far better than anyone else, but he would have a very high bar
to clear before getting eligibility. It isn't just he's going
to play a few games, it would be he is our SS or 2B and won't be
playing the OF anymore.

Not my battle, but I’ll bite…
Why is Betts’s bar different from anyone else’s? He has 5 games
already, so roughly on pace for 50+ games there. There are
numerous stories out there about how Roberts envisions him
getting 40ish games at 2B and 110ish in the OF.
What more proof is needed? This is already more proof than
previous approvals have had…

I thought this context was widely known. The “40 games” is
literally a direct quote from Roberts:

This is a season-long strategy, and he’s playing the position at
exactly the rate Roberts suggested. It’s going so well they’re
going to try him at SS, too.
All of it clearly lines up with league precedent.

Should I take the “Betts is far better than anyone else, but he
would have an high bar to clear before getting eligibility” line
to mean that Betts is held to a different standard because he’s
a better player? Or am I misunderstanding that?
I certainly hope I am.

The high bar was I would need an actual quote and not just 5
games of playing in the infield. He’s done that multiple times
over the years. I haven’t had a ton of time to keep my team
updated, let alone keep track of waivers. I can’t track every
player on every team and what the position players have been
doing.
Curt and I discussed it further via email and we’ll give him
second base eligibility.
